As a huge Final Fantasy 14 fan, I was really bummed to hear the game was hit with another DDoS attack. It seems like the North American servers were hit the hardest this time. It’s especially frustrating because the servers were already struggling with attacks back in November, and now this is happening again!
The attacks happened soon after Final Fantasy 14 released Patch 7.4, titled “Into the Mist,” on December 16th. This update concluded the popular Arcadion raid series and started the story for the game’s next big expansion. Patch 7.4 also added a Strategy Board to help players plan battles, and it made a major change to how glamour (character customization) works by removing most restrictions based on job, role, and level.
Final Fantasy 14’s Latest Update Marred by Disconnections
As a huge Final Fantasy 14 fan, it’s been really frustrating dealing with these disconnections lately. We had a big wave of DDoS attacks back in November, and now they’re back again! Just yesterday, December 19th around 3:30 PM Eastern time, the North American servers were hit. Everyone’s been flooding the official subreddit, trying to figure out if these sudden disconnects and lag spikes are another attack. It’s just really disruptive to gameplay and we’re all hoping Square Enix can resolve this quickly.
What Is a DDoS Attack?
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is essentially a cyberattack that tries to overwhelm a server with traffic, disrupting its normal function. While no server can be fully protected from these attacks, games like Final Fantasy 14 can lessen the impact by redirecting traffic or using other protective measures implemented by Square Enix and its partners. Players affected by an attack can try logging back in after a short wait, though they might encounter a long login queue. Square Enix has acknowledged the issue and is continuing to monitor the situation.
Following the DDoS attacks in November, Square Enix updated the Deep Dungeon feature in Final Fantasy 14. Now, if a player disconnects during a Deep Dungeon run, they can pick up where they left off if they reconnect within 10 minutes. However, if anyone in the party is defeated while the disconnection is happening, the entire group will have to restart from the beginning of the current floor.
Other Known Issues With Final Fantasy 14’s Latest Update
The newest update for Final Fantasy 14 had a few problems that needed fixing, but one bug has become a funny source of community fun. After Patch 7.4 launched, players discovered a level 1 deer in the Coerthas Western Highlands – an area meant for much stronger enemies. Players nicknamed it ‘MissingNo,’ and despite knowing it’s a glitch from the new patch, they’ve been taking photos with it and even holding meetups around it!
Despite some quick fixes Square Enix applied to Final Fantasy 14 on December 19th – addressing issues with the Cosmic Exploration content and certain character customizations – players were still finding the unusual MissingNo deer in the Coerthas Western Highlands. It remains to be seen if and when Square Enix will remove these low-level creatures in a future update.
