Players of Final Fantasy 14 are running into server problems again, this time due to a large-scale online attack. This is especially frustrating because the game just released its most challenging raid content, which requires a stable connection to complete.
The newest challenging raid content for Final Fantasy 14 became available three weeks after Update 7.4 launched. This update also finished the main story for the Arcadion raid series on the standard difficulty setting and adjusted the balance of several character classes, specifically Red Mage and Gunbreaker during moments of high damage. More content, like the next upgrade for powerful weapons and a new version of the Merchant’s Tale dungeon, will be added in smaller updates throughout early 2026.
Final Fantasy 14 Servers Come Under Fire From DDoS Attacks
Unfortunately, attacks that disrupt service to Final Fantasy 14 are happening again, and this latest wave is especially frustrating for dedicated players. It started right as the challenging new raid, Arcadion’s final Savage tier, launched on January 6th at 5:00 AM Eastern time. Players in North America began experiencing disconnects and lag. These issues are caused by a DDoS attack targeting a connection point for the North American servers, and have been ongoing since November 2025. So far, the attacks have mostly affected players in North America, with servers in Europe and Japan remaining stable.
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a harmful attempt to overwhelm a server with traffic, disrupting its normal function. While no server can be fully protected from these attacks, games like Final Fantasy 14 can lessen their impact by redirecting traffic or using other defenses. The specific network pathway affected is managed by NTT, a Japanese telecom company that Square Enix works with to connect players to the game’s servers in California.
As of today, at least five raiding teams have successfully completed two of the most challenging encounters in the Arcadion Heavyweight Savage raid, with two of those teams based in North America. Unfortunately, North American players have been experiencing server problems, so some raiding teams have found workarounds to maintain stable connections. Some are using gaming VPNs to bypass problematic servers and stay online, even during attacks that disrupt service. Others are using the game’s Data Center Travel feature to play on servers in Australia. However, playing on Australian servers adds delay, which can make precise timing in the fights more difficult. It’s possible the initial server issues have already impacted raid progression.
Final Fantasy 14’s Server Issues May Impact The World-First Savage Raid Clears
Despite a Christmas Day patch fixing some bugs from the 7.4 update, server problems with Final Fantasy 14 continued to plague players. Because challenging raids require a stable connection, these ongoing issues in North America have forced players to find alternative ways to play. This situation could impact which teams achieve the first successful completions of the Arcadion Heavyweight Savage Raid. Square Enix has acknowledged the problems and is investigating, but it remains to be seen how they will be fixed.
The challenging Arcadion Heavyweight Savage Raids aren’t the last of the difficult content Square Enix has planned for the Dawntrail expansion. Patch 7.5, coming in spring 2026, will add another Ultimate raid designed for eight players. It’s still uncertain if Square Enix will have resolved the current server problems by that time.
