As a dedicated Final Fantasy 14 player with countless hours invested in the game, it’s always bittersweet to see servers go away. The upcoming shutdown of the Shadow data center, which has been my home for quite some time now, is no exception. I’ve made friends, formed alliances, and embarked on countless adventures within its virtual borders.
In just over two weeks, on August 27th, four “Final Fantasy 14” servers under the Shadow data center in Europe will go offline following maintenance. These servers, named Tycoon, Titania, Innocence, and Pixie, will no longer be accessible to players starting from August 15th.
Prior to the unveiling of the Dawntrail expansion, Final Fantasy 14 announced the addition of the Shadow data center to help manage overcrowding in the Chaos and Light data centers in Europe. Labeled as a temporary solution with four overflow servers, players could only access it through Data Center Travel, unable to create new characters or buy property there. The Shadow data center was established following the launch of Endwalker, which experienced extended queue times due to server capacity reaching its maximum limit. In an effort to prevent recurring issues, Square Enix opted to set up the probationary servers in Europe.
After the successful launch of Dawntrail, Square Enix announced that their temporary data center has fulfilled its role. Following some server upgrades, the Shadow data center will be closed on August 27th. Consequently, servers such as Titania, Innocence, Tycoon, and Pixie will no longer be accessible for gameplay after this date. From August 15th at 11:00 PM Eastern, switching to the Shadow data center for Final Fantasy 14 players will no longer be an option. Square Enix stated in a Lodestone post that players with characters on the affected data center can still continue playing by returning to their Home World. The company did not specify how long the maintenance would take but advised players to transfer back to their home worlds beforehand to prevent any complications.
Which Final Fantasy 14 Servers Are Going Away?
- The Shadow data center (Innocence, Pixie, Titania, Tycoon) will shut down on Tuesday, August 27.
If any characters are still present on Shadow’s servers after the maintenance ending on August 27, Square Enix guarantees they will be safely transported back to their respective home worlds in either the Light or Chaos data centers. The closure of the Shadow data center is scheduled for approximately two months following its initial launch, which occurred prior to the early access period of Dawntrail. Once Shadow has been decommissioned, players of Final Fantasy 14 in Europe will be left with just 16 servers, evenly distributed between the Chaos and Light data centers.
Despite the impending closure of the Shadow data center, there’s no need to worry about running out of content in Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail, as it will continue to receive updates in upcoming patches. It remains to be seen whether the probationary servers might reappear in future expansions.
