Final Fantasy 14 May Bring Back Some Familiar Enemies

Highlights

  • Final Fantasy 14 producer and director Naoki Yoshida hints that the Ascians may appear in future patches in some way.
  • The previous expansion, Endwalker, brought the tale of Hydaelyn and Zodiark to a close, leaving the Ascians unable to achieve their biggest goal.
  • Yoshida suggested that clues regarding the remaining Ascians may appear in future content updates.

As a dedicated Final Fantasy 14 player with countless hours spent exploring the intricacies of Eorzea and its rich lore, I can’t help but be intrigued by Naoki Yoshida’s recent hints regarding the potential return of the elusive Ascians. The Ascians have long been a source of fascination for me, with their enigmatic nature and mysterious intentions shrouded in ambiguity.

Caution: This article reveals significant plot points about Final Fantasy 14’s Dawntrail. In an interview, producer and director Naoki Yoshida hinted that the enigma of the Ascians may not be fully resolved for players, as some aspects of their storyline remain undisclosed. Unfortunately, Yoshida was tight-lipped about how the Ascians would continue to influence Final Fantasy 14.

From the onset of “Final Fantasy 14,” the Ascians have posed a challenge for players. Referred to as various names including Ancients, Paragons, and the Convocation of Fourteen, their initial objective was to bring about Umbral Calamities, similar to those resulting in the appearance of Bahamut, and reformation of Elder Primal Zodiark. When Hydaelyn’s ancient world, Etheirys, shattered into fourteen pieces, both Zodiark and Hydaelyn experienced a comparable fate. In the main storyline of “Endwalker,” the Warrior of Light and their allies manage to defeat both Zodiark and Hydaelyn. Consequently, achieving one primary goal for the Ascians is no longer an option.

As a gamer in the world of Final Fantasy 14, I’ve taken down several Ascians during my adventures, but there are still a few elusive ones out there. Recently, during an interview at the 2024 Japan Expo in Paris with Yoshida and his team, they hinted that these mysterious beings might have more roles to play in our story. Although they haven’t made an appearance in Dawntrail’s main quest yet, there could be hidden clues for us to uncover in upcoming content updates. However, Yoshida was tight-lipped about whether any remaining Ascians would make a comeback or not. To date, I’ve eliminated seven Convocation members: Lahabrea, Emet-Selch, Elidibus, and four others, collectively known as the Unsundered. These powerful enemies have left quite an impact on our journey.

Final Fantasy 14 May Not Be Done With The Ascians

  • Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida said the team may have stories left about the Ascians.
  • With the Hydaelyn-Zodiark Saga now over, the Ascians’ original goal of reviving Zodiark can never be achieved.
  • Yoshida refused to say when or where any Ascians could appear but said some clues can still be found.

Although the Warrior of Light carries the Crystal of Azem, one of the Convocation’s members, they have no memory of their past life as an Ancient. Yoshida mentioned that the remnants of the Ascians’ stories are potential themes for the development team to explore in future updates. He assured fans, however, that Square Enix would not revisit previously concluded tales or weaken other Ancients like Emet-Selch through subsequent storylines following “Endwalker.”

In the latest update, or Patch 7.01, of “Final Fantasy 14,” players are being challenged in a wrestling-esque fashion by the Arcadian raids. It’s uncertain if an Ascian will emerge as a future raid boss, but it’s not completely out of the question.
