Final Fantasy 14 Performer Gets a Personal Apology from Yoshi-P

Naoki Yoshida, the director of Final Fantasy 14, has personally apologized to Sena Bryer, the voice actor for the upcoming Dawntrail expansion’s character, Wuk Lamat. This comes after a wave of criticism directed at Bryer.

The newest expansion for Final Fantasy 14, called Dawntrail, came out in 2024 and has sparked some debate among players. The game’s player numbers have decreased, and the developers are carefully reviewing the mixed reactions to the expansion as they plan future updates. Most feedback has been constructive, focusing on the story and gameplay, but some criticism, particularly regarding the character Sena Bryer, hasn’t been as positive.

Yoshi-P Apologizes to Wuk Lamat Voice Performer

Sena Bryer recently spoke with The Gamer about her experiences with the game, including the negative reactions to her character and performance. Her character, Wuk Lamat, has been a point of contention, especially with her prominent role in the upcoming Dawntrail expansion. However, Yoshi-P’s apology wasn’t directed at concerns about the character itself, but rather at the harsh online negativity Bryer personally received. Bryer and Yoshi-P reportedly met during Anime Expo in early 2025, where he was a guest.

Sena Bryer, an actor in the game, received hateful online messages after some players reacted negatively to a transgender person being cast in a role. Bryer reported the harassment to Square Enix, and Yoshi-P, the game’s director, was deeply upset by it, even apologizing for the situation. Square Enix took the issue seriously and worked to protect its employees from further abuse. Yoshi-P publicly apologized on behalf of the entire team at Anime Expo. The development team hadn’t done anything to cause the hate, but they were clearly saddened by what happened to Bryer.

Following feedback on the performance, Final Fantasy 14 rerecorded some of Wuk Lamat’s lines. Some players felt the original voice direction, rather than the voice actor’s performance, was the issue. While the negative reactions online were unpleasant, Bryer, the voice actor, said she doesn’t regret the experience. She received a large amount of support – approximately 100 positive messages on Twitter for every negative one.
