Following a significant public uproar over the past month, Square Enix, the developers of Final Fantasy 14, have now addressed concerns about privacy and security that emerged with the recent update to their blocking feature.
In a public statement on the forum, both the show’s producer and director Naoki Yoshida have admitted to the problem at hand and discussed possible solutions that Square Enix are thinking about to address it.
As per Yoshida’s statement, the team behind Final Fantasy 14 is mulling over two possible solutions. One of these options involves reaching out formally to the creator of the offending plugin, asking them to remove it from circulation and delete any existing copies.
An alternative approach could involve taking the matter to court, although the specifics and applicable law aren’t specified, but it’s worth noting that game developers have taken legal action against their community members from various regions before.
In his final remarks, Naoki Yoshida emphasized once more that the employment of external tools is not allowed in Final Fantasy 14, primarily for safety reasons as shown here. Furthermore, he kindly requested players to abstain from disclosing information about these plugins to prevent giving incentive to harmful users.
What Is The Final Fantasy 14 Account ID Problem?
With the Dawntrail DLC update, modifications to the game’s blacklist system shifted a significant amount of data handling to the client side, creating an opportunity for plugin developers to take advantage of this change.
The primary weakness lies in the account identification. Initially, users could interact with other players based on their character names alone. This setup facilitated evading blocks by creating a fresh character and dodging unwanted interactions by switching to an alternative character associated with the same account.
Through the Dawntrail update, preventing interaction with another player is achieved by restricting access to their account. This restriction occurs when a specific user ID related to that account is blocked, and this information can be accessed on your client-side.
One method of rephrasing in a simple and natural manner would be: Playerscope, a notable plugin under scrutiny, enables users to identify the account ID associated with another player’s character. This makes it extremely challenging for individuals to remain undetected simply by creating a fresh character.
As a gamer, I found myself at odds with PlayerScope due to its intrusive behavior. I wasn’t alone in this feeling, as other players also voiced their concerns. Regrettably, the creator seemed unwilling to heed our pleas, choosing instead to persist with the plugin despite the mounting security issues it presented.
If PlayerScope meets Square Enix’s requirements, they will still have to ensure that user IDs remain hidden from other players. Failure to do so could lead to the emergence of imitator plugins in the near future.
