As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of playing Final Fantasy games under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest addition to the series, Final Fantasy 16, has left me both intrigued and yearning for more. While some may argue that its departure from traditional turn-based combat is a step too far, I find myself in agreement with those who think it was a bold move that added depth to the gameplay experience.
The game titled Final Fantasy 16, known for its mature content and departure from the series’ typical turn-based and party-centric combat, has sparked debate within the Final Fantasy community. Despite facing criticism initially, it has managed to hold its ground, even after surpassing a year since its launch, and continues to garner attention. Notably, it has launched two substantial DLC expansions, with “The Rising Tide” being particularly well-received. Contrary to initial expectations, the developers might consider producing additional content beyond what was previously confirmed with The Rising Tide. However, other paths could potentially be more beneficial for the game, and both Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 13 have already laid groundwork in this regard.
As a long-time fan of the Final Fantasy series who has played numerous installments since its inception, I can confidently say that Final Fantasy X stands out as one of the most significant entries in the franchise for me personally. This is primarily because it was the first mainline game to feature fully-voiced characters, a feature that revolutionized my gaming experience and immersed me even deeper into the world of Final Fantasy.
Like FF10 and FF13, Final Fantasy 16 Could Use a Direct Sequel or Two
Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 13 Both Had Direct Sequels
As a dedicated fan of the Final Fantasy series, I can’t help but reflect on the sequels that followed two iconic titles – Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIII. While opinions may differ on their merits, these games indeed had direct follow-ups. Specifically, Final Fantasy X had one sequel, while Final Fantasy XIII saw not one, but two.
Instead of just one installment like Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 13 was followed by two direct sequels: Final Fantasy 13-2 in 2011 and another two years later. The trilogy, which started with the release of Final Fantasy 13 in 2009, has stirred much debate due to its departure from the traditional Final Fantasy formula. However, Lightning, the protagonist of this series, is often praised as one of the franchise’s top characters.
Final Fantasy 16 Could Use a Sequel to Clear Up Its Ending and Advance Its Plot
Similar to Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 16 boldly ventured into uncharted territory, setting it apart from its predecessors. This uniqueness alone could warrant a follow-up, but the open-ended finale makes it an even more compelling choice for a continuation. The most intriguing mystery left hanging in this ending revolves around Clive’s fate: he is engulfed by the Bearer’s Curse, causing his arm to transform into stone, and then he collapses on the beach. It appears that Clive has perished, as Jill is shown weeping over his supposed death. However, a potential sequel could either verify or contradict this, while also moving the story forward.
As a devoted fan, I find myself pondering the possibility that our beloved Clive might still be alive. If so, a sequel could offer an emotional reunion with Jill, along with new, exciting adventures yet to unfold. However, if it’s revealed that he has met his end, perhaps the narrative could shift focus to the intriguing children we were introduced to in the post-credits scene. Regardless of the outcome, while it’s true that Final Fantasy 16‘s ending leaves room for interpretation, I firmly believe it deserves a satisfying resolution to tie up loose ends and provide closure.
