As a long-time fan of the Final Fantasy series, I must say that the latest update about Final Fantasy 16 has left me both excited and slightly impatient. The news that the PC version is launching on September 17 is music to my ears, but as a proud owner of an Xbox Series X/S, the prospect of playing this masterpiece on my console remains an elusive dream.

As reported in an interview, Hiroshi Takai, director of Final Fantasy 16, mentioned that Square Enix and Creative Studio 3 have taken note of fans’ requests to bring the game to Xbox Series X/S. Although Takai did not disclose any specific plans for a Final Fantasy 16 release on Xbox, he expressed his hope that such an event might occur in the future.

During a hectic week for Final Fantasy 16, the exciting news came in on August 19. Creative Studio 3 unveiled that the much-anticipated PC adaptation of Final Fantasy 16 will hit Steam and Epic Games Store on September 17. This version, called the Complete Edition, comes packed with the additional content from Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide expansions. Just one day before the 2024 Gamescom Opening Night Live event, Square Enix released an announcement trailer on various social media platforms. For PC users, the Final Fantasy 16 release will support AMD FSR, Nvidia DLSS, and Intel XeSS upscaling technologies, promises an unlimited frame rate, and requires a minimum of 170 GB free space on an SSD.

Despite the PC version of Final Fantasy 16 launching over a year after its initial PS5 release, there could potentially be further releases in the future, according to Windows Central. However, as Creative Studio 3 is currently focusing on getting the PC port ready for its September 17 release, it seems that Final Fantasy 16 will stay exclusive to the PlayStation 5 for now. Takai has expressed interest in bringing the game to Xbox Series X/S in the future, but for now, the focus is on the PC version. Takai also shared that he’s been encouraged by the positive feedback from Final Fantasy fans about the characters and story of Final Fantasy 16.

Despite ongoing speculation about a potential Xbox version of Final Fantasy 16, it’s worth noting that Square Enix has an existing collaboration with Microsoft, which facilitated the release of Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox. It’s unclear at this point whether this partnership could lead to more Final Fantasy games appearing on Xbox consoles in the future.

Although Xbox enthusiasts might need to be patient a bit longer before they can play Final Fantasy 16, the forthcoming PC version will grant a larger number of gamers the opportunity to immerse themselves in one of the top-tier dark fantasy action RPGs. The question remains as to when Microsoft and Square Enix will collaborate again for another release.
