Final Fantasy 7 is Being Review Bombed

Square Enix recently released the original Final Fantasy 7 on Steam, but fans are leaving mostly negative reviews. While the re-release includes improvements to make the game more user-friendly, many players are upset about noticeable technical problems that appeared on launch day.

The popular role-playing game Final Fantasy 7, originally released in 1997, was updated on Steam this month. Square Enix released a new version of the 2013 PC port with quality-of-life improvements like a 3x speed mode, the option to disable random battles, and automatic saving. The updated version launched on February 24th for $11.99, but was offered as a free upgrade to players who already owned the previous Steam release.

New Version of Final Fantasy 7 Is Broken at Launch

The PC release of Final Fantasy 7 hasn’t had a smooth start. Currently, the game has a ‘Mostly Negative’ rating on Steam, with 37% of over 321 reviews expressing negative feedback. A major complaint is that the battle speed is broken – the game no longer limits the frame rate during combat, causing attacks to appear too fast and sound effects to be out of sync. Square Enix quickly acknowledged the problem and released a patch shortly after launch. While the patch fixed the battle speed for many players, it didn’t resolve all of the issues with the re-release.

While players appreciate the recent fix to combat speed and Square Enix’s quick response, many are still finding problems with the new Final Fantasy 7 release. A common complaint is that the game’s menus and textures often look blurry, possibly due to a visual filter. Outside of combat, players are also reporting audio glitches, like the sound for gaining experience points repeatedly cutting out. Cutscenes within the game are also reportedly stuttering and uneven.

Some players have reported issues with the new 3x Speed feature, saying it stops unexpectedly when they enter areas with moving backgrounds. One reviewer also mentioned screen-tearing, but fixed it by switching from fullscreen to windowed mode.

The problems with the new version of Final Fantasy 7 are made worse by the fact that it has completely replaced the older 2013 version on Steam. If you already owned the game, you can switch back to the 2013 version, but you won’t be able to carry your saved progress over. Anyone buying Final Fantasy 7 on Steam now will automatically get this new version, which currently has some issues. While Square Enix is likely working on fixes, it may take time for the game’s user reviews to improve after the negative reaction to its initial release.
