As a longtime fan of the Final Fantasy series, I must say that the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been a truly magical experience for me. Growing up with the original game and seeing how it has evolved over the years has been nothing short of breathtaking.
In a similar vein, you won’t find many games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, as the Remake trilogy stands uniquely as both a reinterpretation and a continuation of the blockbuster original. This unique positioning sets up an engaging scenario for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players: part of the audience is familiar with what’s to come, while others are in for an entirely new experience.
SPOILERS AHEAD
At The Game Awards, Naoki Hamaguchi (director) and Yoshinori Kitase (producer), while chatting with Game Rant, discussed the opportunities and challenges associated with the Remake project. They specifically addressed their unique strategy for tackling the biggest gaming spoiler of all time in relation to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s finale.
THAT Moment in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
In terms of storytelling, Kitase and Hamaguchi aren’t venturing into uncharted territory with this narrative, as Rebirth is part of a trilogy following Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The remake established certain narrative expectations, especially with the introduction of the Whispers to delve into the tension between a fresh story and the original one. As players come to understand, the Whispers are there to safeguard the essence of the original Final Fantasy 7 storyline.
Aerith’s Death Invited a Sense of Dread from OG Players
Some players embodied the essence of Whispers, adhering strictly to the initial storyline, while others viewed Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth as an opportunity to alter it. The remake initially paved the way for this transformation, which FF7 Rebirth continued. This tactic leaves fans of the original Final Fantasy 7 with a growing apprehension as it approaches its predestined end: Aerith’s demise and the wish to alter that destiny. Kitase shared how the scene elicited one of the more divided reactions the game prompted, although not always negatively.
For those who are familiar with the original version, we’ve certainly piqued curiosity, sparking theories and more. However, it’s intriguing to observe a mix of reactions. Some people have different interpretations of the game, making it fascinating to see how each person interprets Rebirth, and the struggle to guess what’s happening is part of the excitement.
It’s quite intriguing to observe these varying responses, and it’s clear that people interpret things differently based on their unique perspectives. As we move forward with our third installment in the trilogy, you’ll notice that our portrayal of this series of scenes diverges from the original “Final Fantasy 7”.
In dealing with ideas about transformation and rewriting the past, the Remake endeavor explores when change may be pointless or what potential consequences change might bring. Kitase hinted that the ending of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth could deepen these themes even more in the final chapter of the project. However, this intense moment isn’t the only way Rebirth revisits and broadens the original storyline of Final Fantasy 7.
Bringing the Threads of Final Fantasy 7 Together
Zack Fair and Cissnei
As a die-hard fan of the Final Fantasy 7 universe, I’ve been thrilled to spot references from the broader Compilation in the latest games, such as Deepground from Dirge of Cerberus. It’s no different with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, where they’ve brilliantly incorporated characters like Zack and, more notably for me, Cissnei. I must admit, the positive response from fans to Cissnei has been heartening, making my gaming experience even more rewarding.
In the game “Crisis Core”, a precursor to “Final Fantasy 7”, characters named Cissnei and Zack were present. Cissnei was part of the Turks, while Zack held the rank of SOLDIER First Class, both serving under Shinra Corporation. However, by the time of the game “Rebirth”, neither of them are actively associated with the corrupt energy conglomerate anymore, as Hamaguchi clarified.
For those well-versed in cosmic matters, the appearance of Cissnei could spark great enthusiasm. Seeing the players’ responses when the game launched made me happy to know that people were genuinely excited about her inclusion…Primarily with our Remake venture, we aimed to blend aspects from the assorted titles within the Final Fantasy 7 Compilation, which turned out to be a great decision.
Zack Fair joins the storyline at this specific point in the Final Fantasy 7 timeline. Although he is only alluded to in the original game by Aerith and makes a brief appearance during some of its most intense scenes, it’s in Crisis Core where Zack Fair’s character is fully developed. This portrayal of Zack is largely responsible for his popularity within the wider Final Fantasy 7 community.
The Gold Saucer is Kitase’s Proudest Change
Besides Cissnei and Zack, numerous other factors contributed to enhancing the fan experience in the remake of FF7 Rebirth, including the franchise’s emphasis and nearly three decades of technological advancements. Notably, Kitase expressed pride in the updates made to the Gold Saucer scenes compared to the original game.
Among my accomplishments, one standout would be the Gold Saucer and the haunting tune, “No Promises to Keep,” sung by Loren [Allred]. I believe fans of the original would eagerly anticipate seeing this location and Aerith in the Remake project. The date event and related sequence, along with the stage play, were less elaborate in the original version, so we aimed to make it more grandiose, particularly by incorporating live acting on stage and replicating a true theater experience. Having our setting, our stage, Aerith present, and then hearing that theme song as characters take the stage perfectly captured her emotions. I believe we achieved great success in bringing this to life.
Speaking of Hamaguchi, he’s quite pleased with the way the team handled the open-world aspects in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, particularly the sensation of leaving Midgar and venturing into the overworld. This is a significant milestone as it paves the way for the complete freedom of exploration that Part 3 will offer when the Highwind soars through the skies.
