Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, has expressed that he’d prefer not to lead a remake of Final Fantasy 6 himself. He’d rather offer support and guidance to a new director who takes on the project, allowing them to take the lead.
First released for the SNES in 1994, Final Fantasy 6 is widely considered a classic RPG and a fan favorite in the Final Fantasy series. The game follows a diverse group of heroes – including the mysterious Terra and the adventurous Locke – as they fight against the powerful Gestahlian Empire and the villainous Kefka Palazzo. With its engaging Active Time Battle system, customizable magic, and memorable story, Final Fantasy 6 remains a fantastic RPG experience for players today.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Director Would Rather See Someone Else Take Charge of a Potential FF6 Remake
Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, has been working on the project for nearly ten years and is nearing completion. While Final Fantasy 6 was a major inspiration for him growing up, he believes someone else should direct a potential remake. He explained that his team closely followed an existing story during the FF7 Remake’s development, so personal influences from FF6 weren’t included. However, if Final Fantasy 6 were to receive a remake similar to FF7, Hamaguchi would happily support the lead director and contribute in a secondary role.
As a huge fan, I was really fascinated to hear Hamaguchi talk about the ideas behind each Final Fantasy 7 Remake game. He explained that with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, they really focused on the theme of bonds – you see it throughout the whole game as Cloud and the others travel the world. It’s not just what they say to each other, but how they fight together, with special team-up attacks showing how close they are. He also mentioned back in September 2025 that they’d already picked a central idea for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, but he wouldn’t tell us what it is! We still don’t know when Part 3 will come out, or even what it’s called, but Square Enix has hinted that we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out what they’ve got planned.
Final Fantasy 6 and 7 Remake Can Be Played on More Platforms Than Before
As a huge Final Fantasy fan, I’ve always loved Final Fantasy 6, but it never got the full remake treatment that Final Fantasy 7 did. Thankfully, it is included in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection! That means we get the original soundtrack and a remastered one, with the same classic gameplay from the SNES version. It’s available on pretty much every platform now, and it’s been really popular, which is awesome. So, if you’ve never played Final Fantasy 6 before, there are tons of easy ways to jump in and experience it!
I’m so excited that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is finally coming to Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2 on January 22nd! It’s a huge game though – like 95GB huge – so it won’t fit on a standard Switch 2 game card. Because of that, Square Enix is releasing it on what they’re calling a ‘Game-Key Card,’ and one of their producers, Hamaguchi, has been explaining why they chose this format for the physical release. Honestly, I’m just really curious to see how well it runs on the new Nintendo console!
