How to Prepare for the Hell House Boss Fight in Final Fantasy 7 Remake
To get ready for this boss fight, focus on using magic instead of physical attacks. Cloud’s sword won’t be very effective against Hell House, which changes its weaknesses. Make sure your team has plenty of magical Materia and support skills. Here’s what you should add to Cloud and Aerith’s abilities before the battle:
- Wind, fire, ice, and lightning to counter Hell House’s different elemental states.
- MP Up and Magic Up to enhance magic attacks.
- Summons with different elemental attacks, like Ifrit for fire and Shiva for ice
- ATB Boost for Cloud, as the player will need to get creative about filling his ATB bar, with his physical attacks being limited.
- Elemental isn’t ideal here, because the player will need to stop and change magic attacks, rather than focusing on just one.
- Healing, Revival, and HP Up to keep Cloud and Aerith’s health bars in check.
Before the battle, players should definitely check out the break rooms. The room farthest from the arena has a bench to restore health and magic points, a vending machine for essential items, and a special drink. This drink doesn’t affect the fight itself, but it can make it more likely you’ll discover optional quests like ‘The Party Never Stops.’

Phase One
Hell House is initially invulnerable to normal attacks and can only be damaged or healed by specific elements that alternate, often beginning with fire. Therefore, players need to use magical or elemental attacks, and pay attention to which elements are currently beneficial or harmful to the house. You can tell which element is healing Hell House by looking at the color of its windows.
- If the windows are red, cast ice attacks.
- If they’re green, cast lightning.
- If they’re blue with frost around the house, cast fire.
- If they’re blue with electricity, cast wind.
If you have trouble distinguishing colors, or keeping track of colors in the game, you can use ‘Assess’ Materia to easily identify Hell House’s current weaknesses and strengths. While doing this, you’ll also need to dodge flying furniture, avoid the House as it moves around, and make sure your characters stay healthy.
Okay, so Hell House has this really annoying ability called ‘Hospitality’ – basically, it pulls you right through the door! When that happens, you need to heal up fast, because you’re going to take damage the whole time you’re inside, and then a big hit when you finally get thrown back out. Seriously, it hurts!
Characters regain health while inside the House through the ‘Hospitality’ attack, which can be very helpful when they’re injured.
In the first phase of the encounter, if Hell House takes damage equal to 1% of its total health, it will become Pressured for two seconds. It will also occasionally use an ability called ‘Barrier Shift’ that changes its resistances. Players can tell what element Hell House is now weak and resistant to by looking at the color of its windows.
Hell House quickly moves back and then starts throwing chairs at the player’s character using its ‘Chair Salvo’ attack. Players need to avoid the chairs by blocking or dodging until the house returns to the main fighting area. When playing as Cloud, it’s helpful to block the house’s less powerful attacks, as this builds up his ATB gauge quickly.
In Final Fantasy 7 Remake, players can use Summons effectively when the Hell House changes form. The start of its second phase is signaled by large, mechanical arms and a head that looks like a bird appearing on the structure.
Phase 2
In Phase 2, the House stops exploiting elemental weaknesses and instead becomes vulnerable to regular physical attacks. This makes Hell House more forceful, with stronger physical hits. Players need to pay close attention to their health, as the house instantly uses its ‘Housing Rush’ ability to quickly charge towards the player’s character.
During this stage, Hell House often uses attacks like ‘Hospitality’ and will sometimes retreat to use ‘Chair Salvo.’ You can avoid its attacks by dodge-rolling around the arena and attacking when you have an opening. After taking damage equal to 2% of its health, Hell House is vulnerable for about four seconds.
When Hell House is down to about half health, it activates ‘God House Mode.’ This creates a powerful shield that significantly lowers all damage it takes. The shield also causes Cloud’s melee attacks to reflect back at him and makes Hell House very resistant to being stunned or staggered. After the shield disappears, Hell House becomes briefly more susceptible to stagger attacks. You can target its arms, and destroying them will stagger the House for three seconds.
Okay, so there’s this attack called ‘Rocket Charge’ you really need to watch out for. Basically, Hell House powers up for a sec, then just rockets straight at you. You can’t block it, and it does a TON of damage, so dodging is the only way to survive. Get ready to dodge roll!
Phase 3
Phase 3 starts with Hell House using ‘Barrier Shift’ once more. This makes its attacks stronger, but also reintroduces the system where certain elements are more or less effective. It will also use a combination of attacks called ‘Heavensward’ and ‘Hellbound’. During this phase, Hell House flies around the arena, shooting firecrackers and using ‘Chair Salvo’. After a three-second warning, it will dive directly at the player, and this attack cannot be blocked.
Hell House becomes vulnerable when it takes damage from the element it’s weak against while in the air. Players need to be careful about which elements they use, prioritize defense, and use dodge-rolls to avoid attacks.
