The director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has confirmed that the third installment in the series is also being developed using Unreal Engine 4.
Square Enix is working on the third installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and while we haven’t seen it in action yet, the developers have revealed a lot of details. They’ve confirmed the game is essentially finished, and now they’ve also settled on a title, suggesting an official announcement might be coming very soon.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Title Decided, Going to Continue with Unreal Engine 4
In a recent GameSpot interview, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, shared more information about the third game. He mentioned that the development team will continue using Unreal Engine 4, and that creative director Tetsuya Nomura has chosen which of the two planned titles they will move forward with – he’s essentially finalized that decision.
The development team considered switching to Unreal Engine 5, but ultimately decided to stick with Unreal Engine 4. According to Hamaguchi, they’ve heavily customized the current engine to suit their specific requirements, and it makes sense to continue working with a system the team already knows well.
Hamaguchi explained that he and his team don’t use AI for generating new ideas. Instead, they see it as a helpful tool to streamline their workflow and handle repetitive tasks. He also noted that AI is increasingly important and can help make work more efficient and open up new creative possibilities.
Good news for Xbox fans: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is currently on track to release in 2026. The game’s developers have also stated that the Switch 2 version will offer a comparable experience to other consoles. We’re curious to hear your opinions on whether the third installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series should continue using Unreal Engine 4.
