Final Fantasy 9 Remake Just Got a Heartbreaking Update

A remake of Final Fantasy 9 might be on hold, or even canceled, according to a trusted source. While Square Enix has other Final Fantasy 9 related projects in the works, a full remake of the beloved 2000 role-playing game doesn’t appear to be happening soon.

Talk about a potential remake of Final Fantasy 9 began in 2021 after a large amount of data was leaked from Nvidia GeForce Now. This data hinted at four possible Final Fantasy projects, which quickly got fans of the series very excited. Although Square Enix didn’t confirm these plans initially, several people working in the gaming industry added fuel to the fire by supporting the rumors.

Final Fantasy 9 Remake May Be ‘On Ice’

Okay, so I’ve been keeping up with the Final Fantasy 9 remake news, and it’s not looking good. A reliable source, Nate The Hate, recently said that as far as he knows, the remake is basically on hold – “on ice,” were his words. He mentioned this when someone asked him directly in a YouTube video. This isn’t the first time he’s hinted at trouble, either. Back in October, he said the remake was delayed and that he didn’t know if Square Enix was even planning to continue working on it. Basically, it seems like the remake has been shelved for now, and it’s probably not happening anytime soon. It’s a bummer, because I was really hoping to see FF9 get the remake treatment!

Nate The Hate doesn’t think the project is definitely canceled, just paused. He explained that “on ice” could mean Square Enix might revisit it later, but he hasn’t heard any recent updates. Fans still have reason to hope Square Enix wants to let players experience the story of Final Fantasy IX in a new way. The Nvidia leak also revealed PC ports of Final Fantasy XVI and the Final Fantasy VII Remake, plus a remastered Final Fantasy Tactics. All three of those have now happened: Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles released in September 2025, and the PC ports of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XVI came out in 2021 and 2024, respectively.

Even though a planned project related to Final Fantasy 9 has been put on hold, fans of the game’s story still have something to anticipate. A prequel picture book, titled Final Fantasy 9 Picture Book: Vivi and Grandpa’s Memories for the Sky, is scheduled to be released in English on May 18, 2026. This book will share details about the history of Vivi Ornitier, the popular Black Mage character.

A short animated series based on Final Fantasy 9 is now planned to be released in 2028 by Euro Visual, a French production company. The project was first announced in 2021, but put on hold when the original production company, Cyber Group Studios, faced financial difficulties in 2024. It was revived during the game’s 25th anniversary in July 2025, and is now intended for children ages 6-13. The series will consist of 13 episodes, each around 22 minutes long.
