Final Fantasy 9 Reveals New Vivi Lore 25 Years After Launch

Approximately two and a half decades following the initial launch of “Final Fantasy 9” on the original PlayStation console, an intriguing detail about the character Vivi Ornitier, the resident Black Mage, has come to light. This game, which captivated millions with its engaging storyline and memorable characters, introduced us to many beloved figures, including Vivi – a young mage who develops a close bond with Zidane Tribal early on in the narrative. Throughout “Final Fantasy 9,” Vivi’s personal journey is marked by his exploration of his enigmatic past, as well as his growth into a stronger individual in response to the grim revelations concerning his origins.

Fans of Final Fantasy cherish Vivi for his endearing appearance, gentle demeanor, and unexpectedly heart-wrenching past. He has since made appearances in spin-off games like Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts 2, and World of Final Fantasy. Many fans also take pleasure in cosplaying as Vivi or creating characters similar to him in other titles such as Destiny 2. Yet, despite the passage of over two decades since his debut on the original PlayStation, there are still many aspects about the beloved Black Mage that remain unknown to Final Fantasy 9 enthusiasts who watched him bravely stand by his friends against the ominous forces threatening Gaia’s world.

This week, Square Enix launched a new prequel picture book for “Final Fantasy 9”, titled “Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure”. Written by Kazuhiko Aoki, who designed events for the game, and illustrated by Toshiyuki Itahana, the original character designer, this book narrates the story of Vivi and his adoptive grandfather Quan in the days preceding Vivi’s journey to the kingdom of Alexandria.

Final Fantasy 9 Prequel Book Explains Vivi’s Name

At some point, it is demonstrated that when Quan initially encountered Vivi, the young Black Mage from Final Fantasy 9 didn’t have a name yet. Some fans speculate that Vivi’s name might be a shortened form of Vivienne, which means “alive” or “lively” in Latin. However, the actual explanation behind his name is simpler: when Quan was measuring his adoptive grandson, he stood on his tiptoes and stretched out his hat, reaching a height of VI’VI (6’6) on the wall where the measurements were written in Roman numerals. Thus, Vivi got his name from this measurement.

Over the last several years, there have been rumors circulating about Square Enix potentially creating a contemporary reimagining of Final Fantasy 9, similar to their acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 Remake series. However, those involved in the original development team have refuted any involvement in such a project. Despite this, enthusiasts continue to speculate that a remake is in the works, particularly following Square Enix’s recent update of the official Final Fantasy 9 webpage with fresh artwork featuring characters like Zidane and Vivi earlier this year.
