Final Fantasy: Biggest Dragons, Ranked

Final Fantasy: Biggest Dragons, Ranked

Highlights

  • Yiazmat in Final Fantasy 12 has 50 million hit points, considered a god among dragons for his power and size.
  • Shinryu in Final Fantasy 5 has giant whiskers that can be used as weapons and can create tidal waves with his mass alone.
  • Bahamut ZERO in Final Fantasy 7 lives in zero gravity and surpasses other dragons in size.

As someone who’s spent countless hours immersed in the fantastical worlds of Final Fantasy, I must say that the scale and grandeur of these legendary creatures truly astounds me. Among them, Bahamut ZERO stands out as a titan among titans, its size so immense that it seems almost unbelievable within the confines of our planet’s gravity.

As a dedicated gamer, it’s no secret that I’ve come across some formidable, fire-spewing dragons in the world of Final Fantasy. In the realm of fantasy lore, these dragons are often seen as the apex predators, nearly unbeatable except by a band of unlikely heroes, possibly wielding a legendary weapon of righteousness or a mystical stone that embodies friendship.

It’s only logical that, given its rich heritage of featuring mighty semi-gods and universe-devouring beasts, there would be some immense dragons soaring through its multiverse. Whether it’s to marvel at the splendor of a grand tail and wingspan or to ponder the magnitude of destruction a titanic dragon would cause upon being defeated, Final Fantasy has housed some of the largest and most awe-inspiring dragons ever conceived.

5 Yiazmat – Final Fantasy 12

Collosal Even Within A Colosium

  • At least as big as: the field of a stadium or grand arena

In Final Fantasy 12, the final side quest monster, Yiazmat, is the most perilous elite target on the map. This is largely because of his enormous size, which gives him an almost incomprehensible amount of health. You can locate this formidable foe within a colosseum found at the Ridorana Cataract. To defeat it and remove it from the bounty list, Vaan, Balthier, Ashe, and their party must first penetrate his armor and then whittle down its massive 50 million hit points.

According to the bestiary in Final Fantasy 12, Yiazmat is regarded as one of the dragon gods and suggestedly had the strength to slay its creator. With claws as large as a hume, if not for his insanity as described in the bestiary, Yiazmat could potentially escape from the colosseum when confronted by three heroes, level 60 or above, armed with top-tier divine equipment and strategies specifically designed to defeat him.

4 Shinryu – Final Fantasy 5

The Deadly Lord Of Dragons

  • At least as big as: a tidal-wave-making machine

In the world of Final Fantasy 5, Shinryu and Omega are two formidable entities among the most powerful. Determining the scale of monsters and enemies in pixel-based Final Fantasy games can be tricky because the party is often portrayed as chibi characters, and there’s some creative liberty with enemy designs. Moreover, the battle screen has limited space. However, a subtle clue about this hidden super-boss’ colossal size (beyond his title as the “ultimate dragon”) can be found in one of his lootable items: his whisker.

If someone manages to pluck a single hair from this creature’s nostril, they gain control of the strongest whip known in the realm, and they can collect an unlimited number of dragon’s whiskers as well. Given that one hair can create a full-sized weapon, it’s not hard to visualize the colossal size of the animal from which it was extracted. Moreover, Shinryu’s attacks are themed around natural disasters, with his strongest move capable of obliterating an entire party – think of it as a devastating “tidal wave”.

3 Bahamut ZERO – Final Fantasy 7

So Big It Lives At Zero Gravity

  • At least as big as: a space station or orbital outpost

Apart from the second installment in the series, Bahamut has been a constant presence in every numbered version of Final Fantasy. Fans have followed him closely through this journey. In Final Fantasy 7, this legendary character had not one, but three different forms, each ascending higher and higher into the sky. The enormous size of Bahamut ZERO is such that it’s doubtful it could endure Earth’s gravity, especially with its elongated limbs.

Having spent countless hours immersed in the fantastical worlds of “Final Fantasy,” I can confidently say that Bahamut ZERO is undoubtedly one of the most awe-inspiring summons to grace the series. This titan, larger than its draconic kin, is summoned using none other than the Huge Blue Materia – a supercharged version of the regular materia, capable of bestowing colossal power upon its user.

2 Midgardsormr & The First Brood Tiamat (Final Fantasy 14)

The Great Primordial Dragonkin Of Old

  • At least as big as: several cathedrals (the brood) or a small city (Midgardsormr)

The First Brood refers to a diverse group of dragons from the world of Final Fantasy 14, featuring some key dragons mentioned frequently in the series: Tiamat, Nidhogg, Hraesvelgr, Vrtra, Azdaja, and previously, Ratatoskr and the authentic Bahamut (although not his corrupted Primordial version). These massive offspring were fathered by Midgardsormr, a legendary figure whose size is immense even to human-sized creatures. Any one of his kin could level a small city merely by rolling over. Nevertheless, Midgardsormr towers above them in terms of sheer length.

Despite being vast enough to swallow the largest and most potent airship of the Garlean Empire, it’s challenging to determine Midgardsormr’s exact size due to his ability to change dimensions based on the aether he stores within him. Furthermore, Midgardsormr has control over his growth, which can be considerable. At its peak, Midgardsormr, known as the father of dragons, might surpass Primal Bahamut, the herald of the 7th Umbral Era, not only in a contest of stretching but also in terms of sheer size when both are at their maximum power.

1 Elder Primal Bahamut – Final Fantasy 14

The Dreadwyrm That Remade The World

  • At least as big as: a lesser celestial body or small moon

As a devoted fan, I can’t forget the electrifying moment when Bahamut, the mighty elder primal, made his appearance in Final Fantasy 14, even though it was fleeting. Just before being trapped and vanquished by Louisoix Leveilleur’s binding light, Bahamut shattered his orbital prison – a moon that Eorzia had thought to be insignificant – and unleashed his Teraflare attack, reshaping Eorzia’s landscape and initiating a calamity marking the seventh age (and patch 2.0, “A Realm Reborn”).

In the game “Heavensward,” a monstrous version of Bahamut, known as Primal Bahamut, is presented. This colossal entity is responsible for re-creating the world through bursts of fire and is actually an ominous manifestation of a once benevolent dragon named Bahamut, the Dawn Wyrm. As the story unfolds, we learn that this malevolent Primal Bahamut somehow managed to survive, although in a fragmented state, within the Binding Coil of Bahamut. Here, remnants such as his massive wing and claw can be discovered. Interestingly, a smaller but still formidable version of Bahamut, Prime, can be encountered and defeated in combat.
