As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent in the sprawling worlds of Final Fantasy, I can confidently say that each iteration has brought its unique twist to the Limit Break mechanic, which is undeniably a beloved feature among fans. However, some iterations have left us wanting more, and it’s these underwhelming moments that I find myself reminiscing about with a wistful chuckle.
In the context of the “Final Fantasy” game series, Limit Breaks are similar to hidden abilities that allow players to launch powerful attacks capable of obliterating any adversary once a character’s untapped power is released. Generally speaking, these Limit Breaks tend to outmatch other offensive moves in terms of potential damage they can inflict.
At times, these Limit Breaks might not live up to expectations, leaving players feeling let down who were hoping for a destructive spree. The appeal of the Limit Break suggests that it would shatter the world each use, so anything less can feel underwhelming.
7 Every Character In Final Fantasy 6
Limit Break: Desperation Attack
For the initial introduction of the Limit Break, there were technical issues that needed resolving before it could be a memorable asset in a character’s inventory. When characters reached a critical health level, they got an opportunity to perform a Desperation Strike, capable of inflicting significant harm.
These Unpredictable Power Moves often inflict substantial damage, yet similar effects can be achieved with alternative techniques. As a result, they don’t carry the same legendary status as other Final Fantasy Limit Breaks, serving more as a foundation for one of the series’ most enduring and iconic recurring features instead.
6 Cait Sith
Limit Break: Slots
As a dedicated fan of Final Fantasy 7, I must admit that the Limit Breaks in the game are an absolute thrill to execute, giving our characters a chance to dish out massive damage on their adversaries with panache. Yet, there’s one character who has earned the ire of many players for various reasons, and his Limit Break is one of them.
In simple terms, aligning Cait Sith’s Slots requires minimal skill, but the outcomes are rather disappointing. The problem lies in the fact that a bad roll can summon the Death Joker, which instantly kills the entire team regardless of their defenses. Many consider this Limit Break to be the worst in the series. It might be wiser for players to stick with using Dice instead.
5 Quistis Trepe
Limit Break: Blue Magic
In the game Final Fantasy, Blue Mages are delightful characters to manage due to their exceptional talent of learning enemy skills, some of which can be incredibly potent. Yet, the usefulness of this ability hinges on players having consistent access to it, an aspect that’s not guaranteed with Quistis.
With her Limit Break, she’s able to utilize Blue Magic, but the power of her ultimate attacks falls short when compared to the rest of the team members. Consequently, Quistis isn’t as effective in combat situations as other characters, often relegated to the B-team due to her relatively weak Blue Magic.
4 Every Character In Final Fantasy 9
Limit Break: Trance
Following the spectacular Limit Breaks displayed in both Final Fantasy 7 and 8, one might find the Trance from Final Fantasy 9 somewhat underwhelming. While it does expand the range of abilities that characters can use, it lacks the dramatic flair and spectacle found in its predecessors.
As a dedicated fan, I must acknowledge that the creators of Final Fantasy 9 made a deliberate decision to honor the roots of the series by avoiding excessive, imbalanced combat moves. Yet, even as we appreciate this nod to tradition, it’s hard not to be a bit disappointed when witnessing Trance in action, particularly for those who have marveled at the devastation wrought by moves like Omnislash and Lionheart in previous games.
3 Lulu
Limit Break: Fury
Lulu is a powerful asset, essential for tough fights in Final Fantasy X. Yet, users often struggle with her character due to a lackluster Overdrive that subjects them to a difficult mini-game.
Playing the mini-game of spinning the right joystick to amplify a specific spell in the Overdrive mode can be rather frustrating compared to the rest of the game’s aspects. It’s challenging to maintain consistent spell casts, and the power of each spell is slightly reduced, which means Lulu’s Limit Break doesn’t have the same impact as her teammates’ abilities.
2 Every Character In Final Fantasy 12
Limit Break: Quickenings
Final Fantasy 12 represented a significant departure for the franchise, overhauling its gameplay mechanics as an attempt to foster growth and development. Notably, the Limit Breaks underwent a transformation, manifesting as Quickenings that need to be linked together to inflict maximum damage.
Nevertheless, players might find Quickenings unpredictable and may not grasp the chaining mechanic until they’ve spent considerable time in the game, leading them to find the extended cutscenes associated with these events increasingly irritating. This can be particularly frustrating since the single-trigger damage isn’t significantly impactful after a while.
1 Clive Rosfield
Limit Break: Semi-Prime
As a gamer, I can’t ignore the fact that activating Clive’s Limit Break is a gameplay essential, adding depth to his abilities and enabling us to perform extended combos. However, since our hero often enters the Semi-Prime state frequently, its power isn’t overly impressive as it acts more like a minor strength boost rather than a game-changing event.
Even though the Limit Break remains impressive, Clive can release even more potent skills by confronting the Eikons he’s assimilated. Fortunately, players are motivated to utilize both resources effectively, prompting Clive to boost his damage output significantly. This is achieved by activating his Semi-Prime state and deploying powerful Eikonic abilities to swiftly eliminate enemies.
