As a longtime fan who’s seen the ebb and flow of console exclusivity since the days of the NES, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief at Square Enix’s recent statement about broadening the reach of their beloved Final Fantasy series. For years, I’ve been juggling multiple consoles just to keep up with my favorite franchises, and I’m tired!
The idea that I might one day be able to play a new Final Fantasy game on the platform of my choice is nothing short of revolutionary. It’s like the promise of a Chocobo-riding, moogle-befriending, Materia-wielding utopia!
And let’s not forget the example Microsoft has set with their first-party games gracing multiple consoles. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Master Chief and Cloud Strife in a friendly (or unfriendly) crossover? The thought of that brings a smile to my face, and perhaps a touch of worry for the safety of the console world as we know it!
Now, if only Sony would catch up and join the party, I’d be able to play Bloodborne on my PS5 without having to dust off my PS4. Maybe they could just port it to my fridge, since I spend so much time there during lockdowns anyway… “Oh look, a boss fight! Better grab some milk while I’m up!
Square Enix may be changing their tune about keeping Final Fantasy games exclusive to one console.
During a chat with IGN Brasil, Naoki Hamaguchi (director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth) and Yoshinori Kitase (producer of the Final Fantasy franchise) addressed the ongoing debate about the last two games in this renowned series, which unfortunately didn’t meet sales expectations due to some controversy.
Despite no specific sales numbers being disclosed for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth yet, Kitase stated that it has been one of the top-selling games on PlayStation 5 this year, alongside Black Myth: Wukong and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
Despite not reaching the high expectations set by its predecessor, which sold an impressive 3.5 million units in just three days upon release, it’s important to note that Final Fantasy 7 Remake benefited from being launched on the PlayStation 4, a console with a significantly larger user base than the PS5 during the COVID-19 lockdown.
It seems that Square Enix acknowledges the passing of an era where games are only released on one console. As Kitase stated, “Although we’re content with reaching certain sales levels, it’s evident that given the evolution of gaming, exclusivity to a single platform is no longer feasible.” He further added, “I believe we must make the game accessible to as many players as possible.
Square Enix is Following An Industry Trend to Ditch Console Exclusives
It’s not just Square that understands the significance of making games available across various platforms; many other companies share this perspective as well.
Reports suggest that Microsoft plans to make its own games available on rival consoles. This includes titles such as The Outer Wilds 2, Indiana Jones and the Fountain of Youth, and even Halo. However, some games like Avowed and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II will remain exclusive to Xbox. There are whispers that keeping Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II an Xbox exclusive was a misstep for the company.
In contrast, Sony has yet to fully adopt this approach. Although they’re moving console games onto PCs, their pace is somewhat inconvenient. For instance, we won’t see the release of The Last of Us Part II on PC until 2025, four years after its initial PS4 debut. As for iconic titles such as Bloodborne and the original Uncharted series, they appear to be console-bound for now.
