The “Final Fantasy” series frequently features epic battles, with the protagonists risking everything to vanquish formidable enemies and challenging bosses. Typically, players are equipped with sufficient power to overpower numerous adversaries obstructing their path.

Sometimes, the heroes face situations where they can’t conquer the overwhelming obstacles in their path. This results in a crushing defeat, but these times of despair are often stepping stones for the main characters to achieve greater things and ultimately triumph over the challenges they initially found insurmountable.

1. Warriors Of Light VS Cloud Of Darkness

The Heroes Have No Chance Against A Fully-Powered Cloud Of Darkness

In Final Fantasy 3, The Cloud of Darkness is an evil entity aiming to annihilate the world. This formidable adversary effortlessly defeats the Heroes of Light, often employing its powerful Particle Blast to wipe out the entire party.

At this juncture, the Warriors of Light succumbed instantly, but miraculously, the spirits of Doga and Unei brought them back to life for their last stand. It’s up to you, players, to assemble the Warriors of Darkness and strategically weaken the enemy before our heroes can confront the Cloud of Darkness in a climactic battle, ultimately saving the world from destruction.

2. Galuf Halm Baldesion VS Exdeath

Galuf Gives Up His Life To Save His Granddaughter

In the series, Exdeath is a wicked antagonist known for inflicting devastation and loss. Following Galuf’s journey to discover his lair, he meets up with his granddaughter, Krile, once again.

A series of occurrences left the Warriors of Light helpless before Exdeath. To add to their misery, Krile tried valiantly to intervene but found herself trapped. When Exdeath threatened Galuf’s granddaughter with death, he broke free from restraints and fought an unwinnable duel against Exdeath. Although he sustained fatal injuries, Galuf successfully protected his allies during the battle.

3. Tellah VS Golbez

The Sage Is Way Past His Prime To Take On Golbez Single-Handedly

It can’t be argued that Tellah was among the most powerful mages in the world of Final Fantasy 4 during his time, but when players meet him, he’s an old man who’s clearly beyond his peak strength and has a shockingly small MP reserve.

Despite surpassing everyone else in achieving their goal earlier on, this doesn’t deter him from attempting to avenge the senseless death of his granddaughter by confronting Golbez. In the end, he manages to unleash Meteor, but unfortunately, it only causes minor harm to Golbez while Tellah pays the ultimate price as he pushes his body beyond its limits in the process.

4. Firion, Maria, Guy, & Leon VS Black Knights

The Orphans Try To Run Away, Only To Be Chased Down By The Emperor’s Dark Knights

In “Final Fantasy 2”, the story commences as our four protagonists flee Imperial aggression, but soon find themselves confronted by the formidable quartet of Black Knights. Given their initial lack of strength, it’s no surprise that players are intended to experience defeat in this early skirmish.

In the aftermath of the battle, Firion, Maria, and Guy are saved by the Wild Rose Rebellion, whereas Leon is captured by the Palmecian Empire. This encounter offers a glimpse into the immense power players will need to conquer in Final Fantasy 2.

5. Terra Branford VS Humbaba

Terra Tries To Stand Up For The Orphans She’s Caring For, Only To Be Struck Down

Following Kefka’s devastation of the world, it falls upon Celes to rally her comrades and halt Kefka’s destructive path once more. As they journey together, the heroes will encounter Terra, who is caring for a group of orphans in the now-ravaged town of Mobliz.

The situation worsens as a menacing creature called Humbaba torments the remaining survivors, leaving Terra too weak to confront this demon alone. However, it isn’t until she accepts aid from her companions that they are able to vanquish Humbaba and the inspiration to join the group is what sparks Terra anew.

6. Squall Leonhart VS Edea Kramer

In A One-on-One Battle, It Was Only A Matter Of Time Before Squall Would Fall

Among the sturdy characters in the entirety of Final Fantasy, Squall stands out, and his struggle against Edea demonstrates this resilience. Given the circumstances, it seemed certain that he would perish during their uneven fight where Edea effortlessly manhandled Squall before piercing him with an icy spear.

Initially, he endures the ordeal and grows powerful enough to confront Edea at her peak strength. Yet, it is later revealed that Edea was being controlled by Ultimecia all along, compelling our heroes to embark on a journey through time and space to vanquish this formidable sorceress.

7. The Heroes VS General Beatrix

A Valiant Warrior Who Can Solo The Entire Party With Ease

Beatrix, from Final Fantasy 9, is exceptionally impactful despite limited screen time. Her appearances are always memorable, and she consistently outshines others with her impressive strength demonstrated repeatedly. Even in her spare moments, she tutors the party, underscoring the immense power she commands whenever given the opportunity.

Witnessing her battle alongside Steiner is a profound and rewarding experience, demonstrating the incredible progress players have made. In a flash, players find themselves commanding other adversaries when controlling Beatrix, making for an incredibly fulfilling instant.

8. Clive Rosfield VS Barnabas Tharmr

The First Encounter Ends With Odin’s Dominant Thrashing Of Clive After Splitting The Sea In Half

In the world of Final Fantasy 16, Clive is undoubtedly a formidable character; however, he encountered someone equally powerful – Barnabas. The Dominant of Odin demonstrated his strength by cleaving the ocean in two with his Great Divide. Subsequently, he engaged Clive in a battle that was clearly unfavorable to the latter.

At this stage, Clive has no chance of defeating Barnabas, given he’s being manipulated like a plaything by the King of Waloed. However, as Clive grows stronger, there may be a re-match with Barnabas, which could very well be the most challenging battle in Final Fantasy 16 up until that moment.
