Final Fantasy Tactics Isn’t Getting a New Game, But It’s Getting Something Else for Hardcore Fans Later This Year

Fans of Final Fantasy Tactics have something to look forward to: Square Enix is releasing The Art of Final Fantasy Tactics later this year. Although a new game isn’t immediately on the horizon, this art book will include previously unpublished character designs and archived concept art.

Originally released in Japan in June 1997 for the PlayStation, Final Fantasy Tactics came to Western audiences in January 1998. The game is set in the world of Ivalice and centers on a political conflict called the War of the Lions, which pits former allies Ramza Beoulve and Delita Heiral against each other. In 2009, a remastered version titled The War of the Lions was released on the PSP. More recently, in 2025, Square Enix launched Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles for modern consoles, where it won Best Sim/Strategy Game at The Game Awards.

The Legacy of Final Fantasy Tactics Lives On

While games like Final Fantasy 7 have been more popular, the story of Final Fantasy Tactics remains beloved by fans. The game spawned several sequels in the 2000s, including Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, each with its own story. The world of Ivalice, first introduced in Final Fantasy Tactics, also appeared in Final Fantasy 12. More recently, Final Fantasy 14 has included references to FF Tactics, most notably with the ‘Return to Ivalice’ raid series in the Stormblood expansion, which featured enemies from both Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy 12. Interestingly, the team at Creative Studio 3, who primarily develop Final Fantasy 14, also previously worked on Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles.

Even now, years after its release, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Tactics continues to influence new strategy games. The upcoming book, The Art of Final Fantasy Tactics, launching this November, promises to reveal behind-the-scenes details and stories about the game’s creation.
