Final Fantasy’s MTG Decks Spark Hopes for FF6 and FF10 Remakes!

Summary

  • Final Fantasy’s collaboration with Magic: The Gathering highlights FF6 and FF10 in Commander decks.
  • FF6’s emotional resonance and FF10’s unique gameplay make them worthy of modern overhauls.
  • The MTG crossover could end up influencing Square to officially consider remakes of both titles.

Over the years, the Final Fantasy series has introduced fans to numerous breathtaking and unforgettable worlds. With sixteen main installments and many spin-offs, the impact of Final Fantasy on video games and popular culture as a whole is indisputable. The franchise remains vibrant, and its upcoming collaboration with Magic: The Gathering for the latest Universes Beyond set only strengthens its reach as it ventures into uncharted territories.

In line with Magic: The Gathering’s past collaborations with gaming franchises such as Fallout, this expansion features exclusive Commander decks centered around Final Fantasy. These decks highlight significant installments selected by designers to showcase the series’ variety and enduring popularity. Among those chosen, two have garnered particular attention due to their lasting appeal and frequent mentions in conversations about potential remakes. By being incorporated into Magic: The Gathering, this inclusion adds fuel to Square Enix’s possible decision to give both these games a remake.

MTG‘s Final Fantasy set releases on June 13, 2025.

Final Fantasy’s Magic: The Gathering Collab Makes a Good Case for Remakes of FF6, FF10

Of the four games that creators singled out for Commander decks in the expansion:

  • Final Fantasy 6
  • Final Fantasy 7
  • Final Fantasy 10
  • Final Fantasy 14

The second installment of the three-game remake series of Final Fantasy 7, which started in 2020, is currently underway, with speculations suggesting that the third might be released by 2027. On the other hand, Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, a franchise MMO experience, has been receiving updates for nearly 15 years now and has seen great success. Notably, the other two games in the series have often been mentioned as potential remakes, and the selection of these games for Magic: The Gathering (MTG) only strengthens this idea.

A Final Fantasy 6 Remake Has Long Been on the Wishlist

Final Fantasy 6 is frequently ranked among the most impactful games in and out of the series, signifying both the culmination and dawn of a new era for Square. Moving beyond the pixelated aesthetics of the SNES age, it paved the way for the revolutionary influence of FF7. Despite the challenge of remaking such a complex game, its enduring emotional impact and continued relevance in gaming culture over 30 years make it a timeless choice. With Terra as the leader in FF6, fans would eagerly anticipate a modern update for the game, even if it’s less expansive compared to the remakes of FF7.

Final Fantasy 10 is Another Strong Candidate for a Remake

The game titled “Final Fantasy 10” introduced several significant changes, one of which was fully voiced dialogues for the first time in the series, as well as a transition to more refined 3D graphics. It also advanced the combat system design from the Active Time Battle structure used earlier to a “Conditional Turn-Based” approach, providing enhanced flexibility and party management, plus its version of Limit Breaks in the Overdrive system. Although it was remastered in high definition in 2013 with “FF10-2” and all additional content, recent leaks indicate that a remake of “Final Fantasy 10” is not currently being developed.

Just as I deeply appreciate Final Fantasy 6’s narrative, I find the storyline of Final Fantasy 10 – with Tidus, Yuna, and their companions battling Sin in Spira – to be a powerful reflection of selfless acts and personal development. In this Magic: The Gathering adaptation, Tidas takes on a commanding role, but Yuna’s significance is undeniable as well. If a remake ever comes to pass, I believe it would be truly captivating to revisit the characters and plot of Final Fantasy 10 with modern polish and production values, bringing fresh life to this classic tale.

Rumors of an FF9 remake have persisted even though Square has not commented on one.

Since the recent venture of Final Fantasy into a new format primarily highlights the sixth and tenth installments, it offers compelling arguments for Square Enix to at least ponder over giving them both a remake in the future. If the crossover is well-received, it could potentially motivate the studio to officially move forward with this project.
