Kingdom Manga Plot and Background Information
Yasuhisa Hara’s Magnum Opus
In the historical manga series titled “Kingdom,” written by Yasuhisa Hara, we journey back to ancient China during the Warring States period (approximately 475 – 221 BC). The narrative focuses on Xin, a war orphan from Qin who aspires to become a mighty general and unite China. After his friend Piao’s untimely demise under suspicious circumstances, Xin vows to realize the dream they once shared together. Along his path, he encounters Ying Zheng, a young king bearing a striking resemblance to Piao, who seeks Xin’s aid in regaining his throne and altering history’s course. First published in Shueisha’s seinen magazine Weekly Young Jump since January 2006, “Kingdom” has amassed an impressive 74 volumes. This manga series is among the most successful of all time, boasting over 110 million copies sold as of December 2024, making it one of the best-selling manga ever published.
In the year 2013, the series titled “Kingdom” garnered the Grand Prize at the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, an annual accolade bestowed by Asahi Shimbun on manga artists or works that emulate the manga style of Osamu Tezuka. Later, this captivating story inspired an anime adaptation from Studio Pierrot (known for “BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War”), spanning 143 episodes across five seasons. The first season, helmed by Jun Kamiya, consisted of 38 episodes; the second season, under Akira Iwanaga’s direction, followed with another 39. Seasons 3 and 4 each comprised 26 episodes, while season 5 concluded with a run of 13 episodes. Kazuya Monma took charge of seasons 3 and 4, and collaborated on season 5 alongside Kenichi Imaizumi for the English release of the “Kingdom” manga, extending its reach to a fresh international audience.
