Rockstar Games states that recent layoffs weren’t due to employees trying to unionize. Instead, the company—known for creating the Grand Theft Auto series, including the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6—says those let go had leaked confidential company information.
According to a new report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, employees shared confidential company information on an online forum accessible to people outside of Rockstar Games. This resulted in over 30 employees being fired.
A Rockstar Games representative told Jason Schreier that last week they addressed a situation where a few people shared private company information publicly, which goes against their policies. They emphasized this action had nothing to do with any employee efforts to form or join a union.
What Was The Union’s Response?
Interestingly, all of the employees who were laid off had been participating in a private Discord chat organized around union activities. According to reports, the only people in the chat who weren’t Rockstar employees were those working as labor organizers.
Alex Marshall, the president of the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain, stated that Rockstar Games appears to be preventing its employees from discussing potential unionization efforts because they fear staff will advocate for better working conditions. He believes management is willing to delay the release of GTA VI to focus on discouraging union activity, and is targeting the developers who are actually creating the game.
