A recent report shows a UK judge has rejected a request for temporary pay for the 31 former Rockstar Games employees who were fired last year. These employees are currently disputing their dismissals with Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, arguing they were unfairly let go. Rockstar claims the employees were leaking confidential company information when they were terminated.
So, after everything went down, it looks like Rockstar might’ve been trying to stop people from forming a union, specifically targeting employees who were part of the IWGB in the UK. Rockstar says that’s totally not true, though – they’ve denied it completely. It’s a messy situation, and as a gamer, I’m hoping it gets resolved fairly.
Rockstar’s Dismissed Devs Won’t Get Pay
A recent Bloomberg report revealed that UK Judge Frances Eccles rejected a request for temporary pay for the 31 former Rockstar Games developers. This temporary pay would have allowed them to continue receiving wages while their dismissals were being reviewed by the courts.
The judge ruled that the former employees didn’t provide enough evidence to convince the court they were fired for trying to organize a union.
The judge wrote:
Considering everything, the tribunal couldn’t determine that the main reason for the claimants’ dismissal was their involvement with the IWGB.
This suggests the employees who were fired probably won’t win their case against the company regarding claims of unfair dismissal. It further supports Rockstar’s claim that these employees were sharing secret company information.
Rockstar recently stated that the employees were let go due to sharing confidential details about future, unreleased games with people on social media, including through a Discord server.
The server has become a major source of conflict. The company discovered that 25 people who don’t work at Rockstar – including past employees, developers from other companies, and even a video game journalist – had access to it. This allowed them unrestricted access to confidential details about Grand Theft Auto 6 and other upcoming games.
With the court’s decision, these former employees will not receive any payment while they work to resolve their issues with Rockstar Games.
