First Hyper Light Breaker Update Massively Changes The Game’s Core Gameplay Loop

As a gamer, I’m pumped! Developer Heart Machine is dropping Hyper Light Breaker‘s first major update, named “Buried Below,” tomorrow, April 29th. This isn’t just about fresh content; it’s also revamping the gameplay experience as we know it. Can’t wait to dive in!

Here’s a sneak peek at the latest content updates, along with the change in gameplay mechanics that will make it feel more like a rogue-lite adventure.

Hyper Light Breaker’s First Major Update Turns The Game Into A Roguelite

Some of the new content players can expect tomorrow once the update hits include:

  • New Breaker “Rondo”
  • Two new weapons: Gloom Shiv, Dreamblade
  • Two new envrionments
  • New enemy
  • New on-boarding tutorial
  • Quality-of-life improvements
  • Bug fixes

When it comes to the changes in the run structure, here’s what players can expect:

In this update, each player’s character will only have a single life per playthrough. If you meet your demise during the game, not only will you respawn, but you’ll also lose any items in your inventory and the Overgrowth area will revert to its initial state. The developers explain that these changes were made to align the game more closely with traditional rogue-like gameplay mechanics.

  • Extraction – More Options for Players: Instead of only having one way to leave the Overgrowth (via the Telepad), players will be able to extract at any Shrine in the Overgrowth and there’ll be no waves of enemies to defeat like before. This change will allow players to extract more frequently, making the game easier as a result, which was one of the main requests from players to adjust the game’s difficulty.
  • SyComs – Follows a Class-Like System, More Loadout Potential: Character customization has been redesigned giving each Breaker one assigned SyCom with fixed stats, and players have the option to equip a perk to the SyCom that gives the Breaker a new passive ability. For instance, Rondo’s SyCom has an equippable perk called “Bladedancer” that increases Rondo’s damage and attack speed. You can upgrade your SyCom stats further at Shrines in the Overgrowth. This change, inspired by player feedback, will make it so each Breaker is similar to a “class” making each Breaker feel different from one another, and make it so you can come up with distinct builds per Breaker.
  • Inventory & Vendors – More Streamlined: The Vault system will be changed as when you die, the inventory in your Vault will no longer carry over between runs except for Golden Rations, the main meta progression currency in the game. This will allow you to focus solely on acquiring new gear during your runs instead of having to focus on managing their inventory so often like before. Additionally, vendors in the Overgrowth and Cursed Outpost will also have new roles, with Bright Blood and Materials now used for purchases and upgrades. While gear sales have been removed from hub vendors, players can still use them to enhance equipped items.

According to the developers, there’s a lot more in store for Hyper Light Breaker during its Early Access phase, with the next significant content update set to arrive this summer. This upcoming release will be the game’s biggest content expansion yet, as stated by Heart Machine. In other words, players can anticipate facing twice the challenge, taking on new quests, and exploring areas never before seen by a Breaker in our upcoming major content release.

We didn’t assign a rating to the Early Access version of Hyper Light Breaker, but we did express that it showcases its exceptional attributes quite impressively. The gameplay loop is finely tuned, and the combat feels incredibly rewarding.
