At CES 2025, Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku shared a 35-second sneak peek of engine gameplay from their ‘New Virtua Fighter Project’, which was initially unveiled at The Game Awards 2024. This brief look at the game in development isn’t actually a playable sequence, but it beautifully encapsulates what RGG is striving for with their first new Virtua Fighter title in nearly two decades.
Pre-Development Only, No Gameplay
It’s crucial to clarify that the 35-second video broadcasted by Sega does not showcase actual gameplay. Instead, it is a sneak peek of in-game footage captured during the game’s development process using its engine.
The short clip provides a glimpse of two characters engaged in a brawl within a bustling market setting, following a quick setup. For several moments, they exchange punches and kicks, sending each other crashing into breakable props around them. Eventually, the action cuts to black and the Sega emblem appears on screen.

Although it’s primarily an idea rather than a hands-on experience, I must admit it’s impressively designed, even for someone like me who doesn’t usually appreciate fighting games. The minute details, such as NPCs going about their business in the backdrop, are well done, and the opening sequence is intriguing, offering players a change from the usual small arenas where battles occur by immersing them in more expansive environments.
During The Game Awards 2024, RGG officially announced “The New Virtua Fighter Initiative,” marking the first installment of the VF series since 2006.
