As a gamer who’s been around since the Battlefield 3 and 4 era, hearing Vince Zempella talk about returning to those “good old days” makes my heart skip a beat! The anticipation for a new modern-era shooter with 64-player maps and a class-based system is almost too much to handle. And the addition of a new free-to-play Battle Royale experience and ‘Gauntlet’ mode sounds like a recipe for endless hours of fun.
Vince Zempella has unveiled initial information about the upcoming Battlefield title, marking it as a high-action, 64-player shooter set in contemporary times.
In a recent chat with IGN, Vince Zempella corroborated several details previously revealed by TopMob in February 2024. Here are four key points:
- It is a return to the classic Battlefield and “back to basics”
- A return to 64 player maps
- Going back to the class-based system
- Aiming for a 2025 release
TopMob recently announced that Battlefield is developing a new free-to-play Battle Royale game. At present, this game offers two distinct play modes: the traditional Battle Royale and a mode called ‘Gauntlet.’ In the Gauntlet mode, teams of players engage in objective-based battles, with the team scoring the least points being eliminated after each mission.
Speaking about a back-to-basics approach, Zempella stated, “In my opinion, if we revisit the zenith of Battlefield, it’s during the era of Battlefield 3 and 4. These games were all about modern warfare. To truly capture the essence of Battlefield, we need to focus on refining this core concept brilliantly, and then we’ll see where it leads us. For me, that quintessential Battlefield feel is most prominent during the times of Battlefield 3 and 4. This nostalgia isn’t just shared by players but also by the development teams. Even though I would add that Battlefield 1942 was also a significant part of those golden days.
