About the pillows

Alternative Rock Band Formed in 1989

In 1989, Kenji Ueda, bassist for Kenzi & The Trips, along with drummer Shinichiro Sato, departed from their band to team up with Sawao Yamanaka, vocalist of The Coin Locker Babies, to establish a new group. They were later joined by guitarist Yoshiaki Manabe of Persia. Officially forming on September 16, 1989, the band produced two albums within three years of their inception. However, following the release of their second album, White Incantation, in 1992, creative differences led to Ueda’s departure from the group. Yamanaka then assumed leadership, adding Tatsuya Kashima as a bassist after a year-long hiatus. Initially, Kashima was brought in as a guest bassist out of respect for Ueda. In 1994, the band released its first album as a trio. From 1995 to 1998, the group experienced an upsurge in activity, releasing numerous singles, with Hybrid November being one of their best-known songs from 1995.

Back in 1999, I witnessed a significant turning point for the band I was observing. This anime production studio named Gainax approached them to license their past three albums for the soundtrack of an Original Video Animation titled FLCL. Not only that, but they were also tasked with creating two songs, “Ride on Shooting Star” and “I Think I Can”, for this very same production.

The incorporation of their music in FLCL sparked a surge in the band’s popularity, particularly in the western hemisphere. This newfound fame led them to embark on a tour across the United States in 2000. Their music continued to be featured in various anime series such as BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (2004), Moonlight Mile (2007), the basketball anime Ahiru no Sora, and more recently, Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer (2022).

The band’s online presence, under the name “the pillows monument”, will persist and provide updates on the individual members.
