Summary
- Florence Pugh hints at a mysterious reason behind the asterisk in Thunderbolts*
- Fans speculate the asterisk may hint at the rebranding of a new superhero team.
- Thunderbolts* may surprise as a hidden gem in Marvel’s 2025 slate of movies.
One of the most intriguing enigmas concerning Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newest release, Thunderbolts*, remains unsolved – it’s not about its storyline; rather, it’s about the title and punctuation. It appears that the explanation behind this decision is so confidential that Florence Pugh has to be secretive about it.
Marketing for the upcoming movie “Thunderbolts” is picking up pace as it nears its release date, which is just around two weeks away. Recently, Marvel shared a behind-the-scenes video featuring Florence Pugh attempting a daring stunt reminiscent of Tom Cruise on top of Merdeka 118, the world’s second tallest building in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The film directed by Jake Schreier is being likened to Marvel’s version of “Suicide Squad” due to its similarities with the DC movie: a group of anti-heroes and reformed villains from the Marvel universe, including Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), and David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian). They team up to combat Lewis Pullman’s character, The Void/Sentry.
In an interview with Fandango about the title of Thunderbolts*, Pugh provided an answer that was as intriguingly mysterious as possible.
It’s a dangerous game and I don’t think any of us are allowed to speak
Thunderbolts*’ Cast And Crew Have Repeatedly Parried The Elephant In The Room
But Fans Can Be One Step Ahead
Pugh’s cryptic remark seems to provide very few clues and is quite similar to previous hints given by the Thunderbolts* cast and team. Last autumn, David Harbour, who portrays Marvel’s Red Guardian, revealed that the asterisk holds significance he was eager for fans to decipher. In contrast, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, offered nearly identical information; however, Harbour managed to confirm that the asterisk was more than just a placeholder in a title.
All these efforts to hide things have not stopped the audience from speculating, as they naturally enjoy filling in gaps with their own theories. Pugh’s latest contribution seems to confirm that the asterisk could be pointing towards the introduction of a new squad at the movie’s end, which many MCU fans believe might be the “Dark Avengers,” a term reminiscent of the 2012 comic book renaming called the Thunderbolts. However, there are other speculations to consider as well: perhaps a New Avengers, Young Avengers, or an Avengers team post-“Avengers: Secret Wars”; you can pick any that appeal to you.
It’s possible that Thunderbolts*, a film initially seen as the weakest in Marvel’s 2025 lineup alongside Captain America: Brave New World and Fantastic Four: First Steps, could surprise us all by becoming the standout title. For one reason, it represents uncharted territory for the MCU with its focus on an anti-hero ensemble – the initial effort in this direction by the defunct DCEU didn’t fare well due to studio interference. If Thunderbolts* fails, fans might lose confidence in the Feige administration’s ability to produce a successful ensemble post-Avengers: Endgame. However, given the MCU’s track record with ensembles, they are likely to excel at it. One thing is certain – if Thunderbolts* doesn’t deliver on its potential, the intrigue surrounding its title will be moot.
