If you’re not familiar with the Five Nights at Freddy’s video game series, some elements of the second movie could potentially reveal surprises.
Summary
- The Five Nights At Freddy’s sequel features Matthew Lillard as William Afton.
- If the sequel follows the game FNAF 2, hopefully it’ll expand the roster, and capture darker tone.
- Suggestions for R-rated sequel at Sister Location due to dark storyline potential.
The development for “Five Nights At Freddy’s 2” is progressing smoothly. Some dedicated “FNAF” fans felt let down when they found out the sequel movie would maintain its PG-13 rating, similar to the original. However, if the creators ever consider a more violent, R-rated sequel, there’s one game that deserves attention.
The filming for “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” has concluded, and it’s confirmed that Matthew Lillard will reprise his role as William Afton, also known as Purple Guy. It’s unclear whether we’ll see him in the iconic Springtrap form or just flashbacks related to his infamous pizzeria killings. Leaked set photos suggest an older and more run-down Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, with Freddy, Bonnie, and Toy Chica visible on the main sign. This hints that the sequel might follow the narrative of the game “FNAF 2,” possibly introducing a fresh cast of animatronics.
Trishna Rihky from Esquire interviewed Josh Hutcherson to talk about how the upcoming sequel will set itself apart from the original movie. According to Hutcherson, Scott Cawthon (the games’ creator) and Emma Tammi (director and writer of the film) have taken into account criticisms directed at the adaptation. The Five Nights At Freddy’s movie had a 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics summarizing their thoughts as “while fans of the game may enjoy this movie, most other viewers found it confusing and not very scary.” If Hutcherson is correct about the upcoming film, these criticisms will likely be addressed.
The FNAF Universe Is About To Expand
Hope You Like Creepy Animatronics!
For devoted enthusiasts of the “Five Nights At Freddy’s 2” video game, they would acknowledge that compared to the initial version, it is notably more challenging and nerve-wracking. In contrast to the original game, there are no doors for cover. Although power is limitless, the player must manage a larger group of animatronics, some recurring with fresh gameplay dynamics. The only advantage is a flashlight to shock adversaries and a Freddy mask to deceive enemies into thinking you’re one of them, all while winding a music box to repel the menacing Puppet. In an interview, Hutcherson notes that “It’s larger in scale; the risks are greater.” Consequently, the movie is expected to share a similar mood and ambiance with its source material. Hutcherson further remarks: “The gameplay mechanics will remain largely intact.
We’re getting even more interactive robots, and these are not your regular ones. It feels like a whole new universe is unfolding before us.

The initial FNAF game subtly developed its storyline and left fans eager for additional content. FNAF 2 significantly broadened this lore by incorporating numerous mini-game sequences that delved into how the animatronics became haunted, including the first visual evidence on screen of the Purple Guy (also known as William Afton) taking a child’s life. Despite the first movie investing considerable time in depicting the backstory of the children who possessed the original FNAF animatronics, most of their gruesome endings were only hinted at through the pixelated intro. If the second film wants to be seen as “more terrifying” according to Hutcherson’s description, it should delve deeper into the adaptation’s portrayal of those events. This can be achieved by including flashbacks depicting William Afton leading his victims to their demise, a crucial aspect that contributed to the games’ intense eeriness.
Set An R-Rated Sequel At The Sister Location
Let’s Get Gory, Y’All
In contrast to the first six games, Sister Location‘s gameplay sets it apart as a unique and chilling addition to the series. Rather than remaining stationary while the animatronics attack during specific nights, the player takes on the role of an explorer, navigating through a subterranean facility and venturing into dark storage units to repair four malfunctioning clown counterparts of the main Freddy Fazbear crew: the Fun-Time animatronics. This change in perspective adds an intriguing element that effectively sends shivers down your spine.
It seems more fitting for a screen adaptation than FNAF 2, as the setting – a facility located deep underground – provides a more plausible explanation for character entrapment compared to restaurant exit doors mysteriously locking. Additionally, Sister Location offers a richer storyline because each night, the repairman interacts with Circus Baby, the first voice-acted character in the series. Through this interaction, he helps fix the facility’s inhabitants, but eventually discovers that Circus Baby is the antagonist who teams up with all the other haunted mascots at the end.
In a twist, Circus Baby is influenced by the spirit of William Afton’s daughter. Although it’s disclosed in the movie that Venessa Shelby (Elizabeth Lail) is Afton’s daughter, there remains ample opportunity to delve into other members of the Afton family tree. Interestingly, the protagonist from the game “Sister Location” is Michael Afton, his son. In the storyline, he ventures into the facility to free his deceased sister’s spirit. Thus, an adaptation of this game would provide a compelling reason for the main character and add layers to an already intricate family saga.
In this game, one particularly gruesome moment stands out among others in the original series. The character Circus Baby is controlled by Afton’s daughter due to his evil intentions. He equipped all Fun-Time animatronics with devices meant to capture and preserve children for experiments. Tragically, Elizabeth experiences the repercussions when she’s left with Circus Baby on the inaugural day of a new pizzeria: Circus Baby’s Pizza World. Similarly, Michael meets an unfortunate end when Baby’s plan comes to fruition, and the Fun-Time animatronics transport him to the ‘disemboweling room’. There, they extract Michael’s organs and assemble a monstrous Frankenstein creation named Ennard, which invades Michael’s body, using it as a macabre suit. The scene is incredibly graphic and if the movie series ever aims for a darker tone, Sister Location offers plenty of material to explore such a direction.
Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 is set to release in cinemas on the 5th December later this year.
