Football Manager 26 Launch Is Steam’s 7th Worst Game Ever

Fans of the popular Football Manager series were upset earlier this year when Football Manager 25 was cancelled. The game had already been delayed several times, and reports suggested there were problems with its development.

So, Sports Interactive, the team behind the game, basically said it just wasn’t good enough for us, their players. They admitted it didn’t meet the quality we expect, and that’s why they pulled the plug on the whole thing. It was disappointing, but I get wanting to release something truly polished.

The announcement also included a commitment to prioritize the next game in the series, with the studio promising that Football Manager 26 would fulfill all expectations.

As it turns out, that promise didn’t quite play out as expected.

Is This Football Manager’s Toughest Season Yet?

Football Manager 2026 is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and mobile (through Apple Arcade and Netflix Games). However, despite a lot of excitement building over the past two years, the game’s launch hasn’t gone as smoothly as hoped.

Okay, so the game just came out, like less than a day ago, and already it’s landed in the top 7 worst games on Steam according to Steam250. Seriously, that’s… not a good sign. I was hoping for a fun weekend, but this is looking rough.

It ranked higher than both Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2 and the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, despite still being considered worse than games like Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight and Uriel’s Chasm. You can find its current ranking here (shared by GreatCtrl on Reddit):

Honestly, things are just getting worse with this game. The player scores are really tanking, so by the time you’re reading this, it’s probably even lower in the rankings than it is now. It’s kinda frustrating to watch, actually.

As of today, only 22% of the over 4,000 reviews for FM 26 on Steam are positive. Players report that the game is frustrating due to a difficult-to-use interface, missing features, a lack of refinement, and frequent crashes. Many feel the game isn’t finished and lacks polish.

One player said they don’t recommend the current version of FM26. They praised the new tactical system as excellent, but criticized the game for having a much worse user interface and experience, missing over 100 features, and feeling unfinished.

One player complained that the game lacks important in-match data like pass networks, heat maps, and average player positions. They were frustrated that this data, which was available in earlier versions, has been removed. They also criticized the user interface, calling it buggy and unscalable, and stated the game felt like an unfinished beta version at launch.

Many fans feel the latest game isn’t as good as the highly praised Football Manager 2024, suggesting the series has actually regressed instead of improved.

A user expressed disappointment with the new version, stating that despite having two years in development, it feels like a step backward. While the graphics are a bit improved compared to the previous version (FM24), several features found in FM24 have been removed. The user also found the new interface confusing and less user-friendly than FM24’s, which they described as practical and enjoyable.
