For five seasons from 2001 to 2005, Michael C. Hall portrayed the character of funeral director David Fisher on HBO’s acclaimed drama series Six Feet Under, a role that was penned by Alan Ball, who is known for writing the screenplay for American Beauty. This role demonstrated Michael C. Hall’s acting versatility, making his performances in the Dexter series even more remarkable.

When “The Sopranos” premiered on HBO in 1999, it marked the beginning of the golden age of television. This period was characterized by complex characters and intricate storylines that didn’t spoon-feed answers to viewers. Two years later, another HBO hit emerged, this time a drama about a family of funeral directors in Los Angeles. “Six Feet Under” was the pinnacle of TV, garnering widespread praise from both critics and audiences, and catapulting Michael C. Hall into stardom. Notably, Hall’s portrayal of David Fisher should have received more accolades, rather than his later role as Dexter Morgan that is often celebrated.
David Fisher was a multifaceted personality, facing two significant challenges – the passing of his father, Nathaniel Fisher, at the onset, and grappling with his sexuality, which was also revealed early in the series. Michael C. Hall masterfully depicted the character’s discomfort, but as the story unfolded over 63 episodes, David became more self-assured. This character, played by Hall, is likely to be remembered fondly by viewers for a long time.

In contrast to Dexter, which started to falter towards the end of its original run and is often criticized for its final season, Six Feet Under consistently maintained its high quality and ended before it was deemed necessary to do so. While both shows explore themes related to death, they present these ideas in vastly different ways. Dexter’s ending is frequently considered one of the worst in TV history, whereas Six Feet Under’s finale is generally regarded as one of the best ever produced.

Dexter: New Blood was believed to have given fans a conclusive finale, however, the popularity of the limited series and Showtime’s merger with Paramount has led to the revival of Michael C. Hall’s character Dexter in Dexter: Resurrection, set for release in July 2025, and it appears that this will span over several seasons. Unlike Dexter: New Blood, which has a complex legacy due to its numerous missteps, Six Feet Under ended on a perfect note and boasted a strong five-season run. Although Dexter Morgan is the most recognized character of Michael C. Hall’s career, it could be argued that David Fisher had the more compelling arc.
