It wasn’t surprising that the original creators of the online game Ashes of Creation responded to Intrepid Studios after the company unexpectedly shut down just two weeks ago.
Zakary Strange, Noah Ortega, and Jacob Burdecki – all former employees – have sued their previous company, claiming they weren’t paid properly and that labor laws were broken.
A lawsuit filed by Burdeki and Strange claims that Intrepid Studios illegally fired them and around 200 other employees without any prior written warning. They also allege that the company didn’t pay them for their last few weeks of work or any vacation time they had earned. According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, companies are required to give employees at least 60 days’ notice before a large-scale layoff.
After a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $3.2 million, Ashes of Creation entered early access in December, receiving a varied response from players.
In January, Intrepid Studios cut 200 jobs. The news was first shared by company director Steven Sharif on Discord, and many of those affected later confirmed the layoffs on LinkedIn and other social media platforms.
Intrepid Studios hasn’t made an official announcement yet. Steam has stopped selling the game and is giving refunds to some players who bought it.

I’m still really worried about what’s happening with Ashes of Creations. It’s definitely not over, and I don’t think we’ve heard the last of it. Honestly, after seeing how many people lost their jobs, I’m not hopeful the game will actually be finished. I’m also wondering if those of us who backed it on Kickstarter will ever get our money back, now that it seems like the project might be falling apart.
