Former Assassin’s Creed Boss Confirms Ubisoft Asked Him To ‘Step Aside’

Marc-Alexis Côté, a longtime Ubisoft employee and key figure behind the Assassin’s Creed games, recently left the company after over 20 years. Reports indicate he was offered a leadership position at the new Vantage Studios, but ultimately declined the role.

In a recent social media post, Côté clarified that he continued working normally until Ubisoft requested he leave. He specifically stated that he didn’t resign from the company, where he’d worked for two decades.

The Truth of Why Côté Left Ubisoft

Marc-Alexis Côté recently shared on LinkedIn that he left Ubisoft after two decades, including a period leading the strategy for the Assassin’s Creed series. He explained that his departure wasn’t voluntary and he didn’t choose to leave.

I know some of you are surprised by my decision to leave the Assassin’s Creed franchise after working on it for so long, and I understand that, especially since I still care about the game deeply.

Let me be clear: I didn’t choose to leave my role.

Ubisoft decided to put someone else in charge of the Assassin’s Creed franchise – someone who fit better with their new way of organizing things. They offered me a different job, but it wasn’t comparable to what I’d been doing for the past several years in terms of responsibility or long-term involvement.

But I also owe it to my teams, past and present, to say this plainly:

I did not walk away.

I stayed at my post until Ubisoft asked me to step aside.

This information aligns with the initial report, which stated that Côté departed the company due to issues surrounding the creation of Vantage Studios, a result of the Ubisoft and Tencent merger.

Jonathan Dumont’s statement reveals he expected to be in charge of the future of the Assassin’s Creed series at Ubisoft, but that didn’t happen. He was deeply disappointed when this didn’t materialize and rejected any alternative roles offered. As a result, Ubisoft asked him to leave, likely because there wasn’t a suitable position for him in the company’s new structure.

Côté wrapped up his post by saying:

Growing up, Star Trek: The Next Generation really shaped my outlook. Later in my career, I started to feel like the captain of the Assassin’s Creed ship – I wouldn’t leave until I knew everyone on my team was safe and secure. It was all about making sure everyone was okay before I could step away.

And that is exactly what I have done for as long as I could.
