Former Destiny 2 Director Luke Smith Responds to Final Update News

Luke Smith, who used to lead development on Destiny 2, recently shared a few quick thoughts about the game before its final update. This came shortly after the Destiny 2 team announced that June 9th would be the date of the last big patch for the game.

Bungie announced on May 21st that a large update for Destiny 2 will be released on June 9th across all platforms. While Destiny 2 will remain playable, this will be the last major content update and Bungie will stop actively developing it. The studio will now focus on its upcoming game projects, including continued work on Marathon. The June 9th update is designed to be a significant send-off, bringing a lot of new features and improvements for players to enjoy.

Luke Smith Comments on Destiny 2’s Final Content Update

As development on Destiny 2 winds down, former game director Luke Smith shared some reflections on social media. He posted on Twitter that the purpose of creating game content is to foster memories and friendships. Smith explained that the eventual end of Destiny 2 felt particularly disappointing not because of what the game had been, but because of all it could have become. Smith began his career at Bungie in 2007, initially contributing as a writer for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. He later became a design lead for the original Destiny and directed the The Taken King expansion.

Luke Smith joined Bungie and became the game director for Destiny 2, a role he held until 2020. While leading the game, he oversaw the release of major expansions like Forsaken and Shadowkeep. He then moved into an executive position at Bungie, continuing to work on the Destiny universe. In Summer 2024, Smith left Bungie following company-wide layoffs that affected around 17% of the workforce. Before his departure, he was developing Payback, a planned spin-off game in the Destiny series, which was ultimately canceled. He wasn’t the only executive to leave at that time; Mark Noseworthy also departed from Bungie.

Following the release of The Final Shape expansion in 2024, Destiny 2 experienced a significant drop in players. While multiplayer shooters remain popular, players have moved on to other games. This decline in players, combined with Bungie focusing on other projects like Marathon, has made it challenging for the company to continue supporting Destiny 2 with limited resources.
