As a long-time follower and admirer of Game Informer, the news of its shutdown was a punch to the gut. I remember eagerly awaiting each new issue, devouring every article, review, and interview like a starving gamer on a quest for knowledge. The magazine was a beacon of hope during my teenage years, guiding me through the labyrinth of the gaming world with wisdom and humor.
A team headed by ex-video producer of Game Informer, Ben Hanson, is striving to safeguard the almost 33-year legacy of this publication following its recent closure. The announcement of GameStop shutting down Game Informer left many fans disappointed who had grown up reading the video game magazine. Launched in 1991 by gaming retailer FuncoLand, Game Informer gained popularity for its unique content on upcoming games releases when GameStop acquired FuncoLand, and subsequently, the magazine in 2000.
hearing about Game Informer ceasing operations left me feeling disappointed and nostalgic, reminiscing about the good old days spent pouring over its pages. The magazine’s website now leads to a notice about its shutdown, which means that countless articles, interviews, and reviews from our past are no longer accessible. At present, there’s no information on whether the site will be restored as an archive for the publication’s content. To add insult to injury, Game Informer’s official Twitter account has gone dark too.
Due to the closure and disappearance of media outlets, various communities are actively striving to resurrect and safeguard Game Informer’s extensive collection of exclusive content. One notable effort in this regard is MinnMax, spearheaded by ex-Game Informer video producer Ben Hanson. Since the sudden demise of Game Informer, MinnMax has emerged as a key resource for preserving its content. As per VCG reports, fans have started uploading old magazine scans and archived online articles to MinnMax’s Discord server.
Former Game Informer Producer Ben Hanson Is Also Making A Documentary
MinnMax’s efforts to preserve Game Informer’s history go beyond just this initial step, as Ben Hanson revealed to Game File that he and his team began filming a documentary about the magazine way back in 2019. This week, MinnMax shared a brief video of Hanson and some former colleagues giving a tour of Game Informer’s final office space, where they reminisced about their time working on the magazine during its peak years.
The closure of Game Informer magazine has left numerous interviews, reviews, and special features in an uncertain state, including promotional content for the upcoming role-playing game Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Fortunately, some fans and organizations like MinnMax are making efforts to republish these articles online. Meanwhile, Ben Hanson expresses his intention to release a documentary about Game Informer soon.
