Former Halo Dev Criticizes “Lame” Remake Changes

The remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, now called Halo: Campaign Evolved, is finally available on PlayStation. However, a developer who worked on the original game has pointed out differences in early gameplay footage and expressed concern that the changes made to the game are not faithful to the original.

The announcement of the Halo: Combat Evolved remake was a huge moment for fans. Bungie’s classic game was getting a fresh look, and for the first time, PlayStation 5 players would be able to enjoy the iconic experience. However, initial reactions to the first glimpse of the remake have been mixed.

Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Makes Key Changes From Original

Along with the news about the game’s remake, a special gameplay demo was shown, lasting 13 minutes. It featured the exciting first few minutes of the game, showcasing impressive graphics. It feels like the classic Halo experience, but visually enhanced.

It seems like most people are quite impressed, but not everyone agrees. Jaime Griesemer, who used to be a game designer at Bungie and is now creative director at Highwire Games, has a different perspective. During his time at Bungie, he played a key role in designing and building many aspects of the game, including gameplay, missions, combat, and the tutorial.

After seeing the new gameplay, here’s what Griesemer had to say on X:

It wasn’t meant to be possible to drive the Warthog and just run over the Hunters. I deliberately added rocks to force players to fight them on foot. Allowing players to easily destroy obstacles ruins those battles. And honestly, the worst thing is they’ve put trees in the landing zone for the WooHoo Jump – it’s frustrating! @game_fabricator, what happened to the classic B30 map?

Marcus Lehto, a former co-creator of the Halo series, recently expressed disappointment that he and other team members weren’t included in the credits for Battlefield 6.

Griesemer responded to numerous comments on the post, acknowledging that players could still manage to get the Warthog through the gap despite his efforts to make it challenging. He explained he intentionally made it difficult but not impossible, and then clarified that the vehicle’s vulnerability to damage actually made the situation worse – the Warthog was just as likely to be destroyed as it was to successfully clear the rocks, rendering any clever vehicle maneuvers ineffective.

The Warthog isn’t meant to be used to simply run over the Hunters. I deliberately added rocks to block the path, forcing you to fight them on foot. Being able to just destroy the obstacles ruins the challenge of those encounters. And to make things even worse, they’ve now put trees right in the landing area…

The focus isn’t so much on the initial changes to Halo: Campaign Evolved and its opening moments, but rather on the broader adjustments Halo Studios (also known as 343 Industries) has implemented throughout the entire game.

Updates are coming to the Halo: Combat Evolved level, The Library. Developers have confirmed they are addressing issues with the level.
