Employees who used to work at Larian have reacted to the CEO’s recent statements on AI, with one of them expressing disappointment and asking for more respect for the team.
Larian Studios has recently been in the spotlight, and not always for positive reasons. While the announcement of their new game, Divinity, initially excited fans, recent comments from a Larian executive about artificial intelligence have sparked controversy online. Now, former employees are speaking out in response.
Former Employee Claims Larian Boss is Lying About Staff Being Okay with AI Use
Larian Studios has faced criticism recently for its use of artificial intelligence. While founder Swen Vincke claimed that most employees are comfortable with how AI is being implemented, a former employee has publicly disputed that statement, alleging it’s not true. GamesRadar+ first reported on the disagreement.
Anne Méthot, who used to work in quality assurance at Larian Studios, said she isn’t shocked by the recent AI developments, claiming Swen Vincke isn’t being truthful about employee acceptance. Selena Tobin, another former Larian employee, also expressed concerns, stating she enjoyed her time at the studio until the introduction of AI. Tobin urged the developers to respect their talented team, emphasizing that they are capable of generating fantastic ideas without AI help.
So, I saw a post from Swen Vincke over on X – they’re not really trying to swap out our concept artists for AI. They also said their success comes from letting people work how they work best and really lean into their skills to make awesome RPGs. Of course, they’re going to look at new tech like AI, but they’re also saying they’ll only change things if it makes sense for their team and how they work. Basically, they’re always trying to improve, but not at the cost of what makes them great. They’re planning an AMA after the holidays to talk about all this in more detail, which is cool.
Hey everyone, so the next Divinity game is looking awesome! It’s going to be turn-based, and you can play co-op with friends, which I’m super excited about. Plus, it sounds like Larian is doing another early access release, just like with their other games. On a different note, I’ve been seeing some former Larian employees speaking out about the boss’s recent comments on AI, and it’s pretty interesting to see their side of things.
