Former Marathon Art Director Talks Positively About His Contributions

Marathon is on track to be released in March, following a difficult 2025 marked by issues and uncertainty. The game was delayed while Bungie addressed concerns, and they’re now preparing to launch what they hope will be a new take on the extraction shooter genre, potentially competing with popular games like Escape from Tarkov.

Recently, Joseph Cross, the art director for the game, left Bungie after working there for over ten years. He departed just months before the game is set to release, and he’s now shared details about his departure in a new interview.

Marathon’s Future is a Tentative One

It’s impossible to say for sure how well Marathon will do when it releases on March 5th. This is a crucial moment for Bungie, as the game represents a significant investment of their resources and hopes. If it doesn’t succeed, it could lead to difficulties for the studio.

Marathon is a new online shooter where players enter a dangerous world, similar to games like Escape from Tarkov and ARC Raiders. You’ll explore a unique setting filled with AI enemies, other players, and hazards, completing missions and collecting loot. The goal is to survive, complete objectives, and successfully extract before being defeated.

That’s the basic way the game works, and we hope it will help Marathon get off to a successful launch.

So, I was listening to an interview with Joseph Cross, who used to be the art director on Marathon, and he was talking about all the stuff he worked on. It was really interesting to hear him talk about his part in making the game!

I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished and confident it will be successful. While I don’t have a say in how the game is ultimately played – I’m not involved in the design or direction – I’m very happy with everything I was able to influence.

No matter how much negativity comes my way – whether it’s online criticism, disagreement with creative choices, or disapproval of certain decisions – nothing can diminish the importance of what I truly value.

He expressed his disappointment with the discussion surrounding the art style of Marathon, questioning if it fits within the extraction shooter genre, which usually prioritizes realism – with games like Escape from Tarkov being an exception.

I’m so excited for Marathon! It’s coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC on March 5th, and honestly, it’s tough to say just how big of a hit it will be, but I’m really hoping it does well!
