In the world of platformer games, there’s no doubt that Nintendo and its Mario series are closely linked. Yet, last year, Sony managed to carve out a distinctive corner for itself when it launched Astro Bot, developed by Team Asobi.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the undeniable success of Astro Bot, a game that has truly made its mark. It’s earned the prestigious title of ‘Game of the Year’ at The Game Awards, and it doesn’t stop there! This masterpiece also claimed the top prize at other award-giving bodies. Now, Team Asobi can proudly add another accolade to their collection – the New York Game Awards’ top honor. It’s a well-deserved recognition for such an outstanding game.
Astro Bot Wins New York Game Awards Game of the Year
Best Game for Kids, Best Game Music, Best Game World, and Game of the Year. Remarkably, Astro Bot won three out of the four categories. The award for Best Game World was given to Elden Ring instead.
At the event, it was the former president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, who took on the role of hosting and honoring the delightful indie game created by Team Asobi.
Fils-Aimé acknowledged that Astro Bot came very close to matching Nintendo’s level of quality in their games. This statement, made at the event, caused a few chuckles among the audience.
Astro Bot, released in 2024, took the gaming world by storm, with many not anticipating such high acclaim for this title. On Open Critic, the game earned a remarkable “Mighty” rating and an unparalleled 99% of critics endorsing it.
Ever since its launch, Team Asobi has consistently released several updates enriching the game with fresh speedrun levels, AI bots, all without charging a penny. The latest update that players enjoyed was the Winter Wonderland package in December, a festive celebration for the holiday season.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can only imagine the excitement brewing for more adventures with Astro Bot in 2025! Although no official announcements have been made, I’ve got my fingers crossed that this beloved game will deliver another fantastic slate of content to keep us enthralled.
As of now, Sony has announced that Astro Bot has been purchased approximately 1.5 million times, which was revealed in November. Given the many awards and recognition it has earned since then, it’s likely that a substantial number of copies have been sold beyond this figure. Notably, its successful introduction places it among the top 10 platform game launches ever recorded.
