Former Perfect Dark Dev Reportedly Working on Starcraft Shooter Game

Drew Murray, who used to work on the game Perfect Dark, is now said to be developing a shooter game based on Blizzard’s StarCraft series. This hiring suggests that the new StarCraft game, which hasn’t been officially announced yet, is progressing beyond the initial planning stages, and it’s not the only indication of that happening.

Blizzard has previously canceled two first-person shooter games based on StarCraft, both of which were abandoned during the 2010s. Rumors of a new StarCraft shooter began circulating in September 2024 after industry reporter Jason Schreier mentioned in his book, Play Nice, that Blizzard was developing another one. According to Schreier’s sources, Dan Hay, a former Ubisoft executive producer known for his work on the Far Cry series, is leading the project, which has not yet been officially announced.

Perfect Dark Developer Reportedly Joins StarCraft Shooter Team

Talk about a possible new Blizzard game has resurfaced this week. Industry insider Jez Corden reported that Drew Murray, a veteran developer known for his work on Perfect Dark, recently joined Blizzard. The speculation is he may be involved with an unannounced StarCraft shooter. On the April 10th episode of The Xbox Two Podcast, Corden shared this information, but clarified he couldn’t definitively confirm Murray is working on StarCraft specifically, only that it’s a potential project at Blizzard.

Murray recently joined Blizzard as an Associate Design Director, starting in January 2026, according to his LinkedIn profile. Before that, he worked at Insomniac Games for over 13 years in two different periods. Most recently, from early 2021 to 2024, he was a Design Director on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and another secret project. While he likely wasn’t working on Marvel’s Wolverine – which was formally announced in 2025, it was originally mentioned back in September 2021 – his role at that time was on a different game.

Following his departure from Insomniac in late 2015, Murray took a three-year break from game development. He then joined The Initiative, the Xbox team behind the reboot of Perfect Dark, where he served as director. However, he left that position in February 2021 and quickly returned to Insomniac. Ultimately, Microsoft closed The Initiative in July 2025 and canceled the Perfect Dark reboot after seven years of development, reportedly with the game still far from finished.
