Layden began working for Sony in Tokyo as a communications assistant back in 1987. He later took over the position of chairman at SIE Worldwide Studios from Jack Tretton in 2014. During his time there, Layden represented Sony and played a significant role in the early development of the PS5. After retiring from Sony in 2019, Layden joined Tencent Games as a strategic advisor in 2022. SIE Worldwide Studios was later rebranded to PlayStation Studios in 2020 and is now led by Hermen Hulst, previously the director of Guerrilla Games. Following a corporate reorganization at Sony, Hulst will report directly to Hideaki Nishino, who will become the sole CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment starting April 1, 2023.
During talks about potential features of the PS6, Layden shared his perspective on how Xbox is adopting new approaches compared to its past. In an interview with Kiwi Talkz on YouTube, Layden expressed that if executed correctly, the multiplatform approach Xbox is employying for certain games could be advantageous for the company. He explained, “Multiplatform is a tactic, especially in a time when the cost of development is skyrocketing. Multiplatform means expanding your potential customer base, as marketing experts put it.
Former Sony Lead Shares Optimistic Outlook For Microsoft’s Multiplatform Approach
Nevertheless, the previous head of SIE studio expressed that Microsoft must juggle their multiplatform strategy, as it might pose a challenge when trying to persuade consumers to choose their platform instead of simply offering a game on their preferred platform. To date, titles like “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle“, “Doom: The Dark Ages“, and “Forza Horizon 5” have been officially announced for release on PS5 in 2025.
In a similar vein, Layden drew a parallel between Microsoft’s multiplatform approach and the strategy Sega adopted after their final console, the Sega Dreamcast, didn’t take off in the 2000s. This setback prompted Sega to leave the console market and concentrate on becoming a third-party AAA game developer. Post this strategic shift, Sega created and distributed games like “Sonic Heroes” and the initial “Yakuza” series on the PS2. Layden acknowledged that this change has proven advantageous for Sega.
