Mark Rubin, a veteran video game developer known for his work on the original Call of Duty games, has spoken about the possibility of bringing back his first-person shooter, XDefiant. Rubin was an executive producer for XDefiant at Ubisoft from 2019 until the game launched in 2024. Unfortunately, Ubisoft discontinued support for XDefiant and closed its servers in June 2025, ending its run.
When XDefiant was announced in 2021, many players immediately saw it as a possible competitor to Call of Duty, a comparison often made with other first-person shooters like Battlefield and Titanfall. However, like those games before it, XDefiant didn’t manage to surpass Call of Duty in popularity and was ultimately discontinued. While the game initially attracted a large audience – even breaking a Ubisoft record by reaching one million players faster than any previous title – player numbers quickly dropped, leading to speculation about its potential shutdown.
Mark Rubin Says Ubisoft Could Bring Back XDefiant if It Wanted To
Mark Rubin recently addressed fan questions about the future of XDefiant, a shooter that Ubisoft will stop supporting in June 2025. While Rubin initially dismissed rumors of the game’s cancellation, he later confirmed the support end date. A fan recently asked Rubin on Twitter if XDefiant could make a comeback, saying many people miss it. Rubin admitted he misses the game too, but explained that any potential return depends on Ubisoft. He believes Ubisoft could reactivate the servers if they chose to, but noted the company is currently facing financial difficulties.

The video game industry has faced challenges recently, with many companies laying off staff and closing studios. Ubisoft has been particularly affected, dealing with financial difficulties, unsuccessful game releases, and employee strikes. As part of a recent company restructuring, Ubisoft cancelled several upcoming games, most notably the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, which was nearing completion.
Ubisoft cancelled XDefiant surprisingly quickly, just over a year after its release on May 21, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game was discontinued in June 2025. During its 13 months, Ubisoft regularly updated XDefiant with new content, including factions inspired by their other popular franchises like Rainbow Six, Assassin’s Creed, and Far Cry.

So, Mark Rubin, the dev behind XDefiant, has announced he’s stepping away from game development after this one. He posted on Twitter saying he really loves making shooters, but he wants to focus on spending time with his family. Basically, he’s passing the torch and hoping someone else will keep working on the ideas he had. That means if you’re hoping XDefiant makes a comeback, you’ll have to reach out to Ubisoft now, not him, since he’s left the studio. Honestly, though, with Ubisoft so focused on big names like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, I don’t see them putting a lot of effort into bringing back a live service game that didn’t do so well.
