Fortnite Players Are Getting Their Cut of a $72 Million Refund – Here’s How You Can, Too

As a long-time Fortnite enthusiast who has spent countless hours battling it out on virtual battlefields, I can’t help but feel a sense of vindication as I hear about the first wave of refunds being distributed from the $245 million fine levied against Epic Games. For years, I’ve felt that my hard-earned money was slipping through my fingers due to the game’s less-than-transparent purchasing mechanisms. I remember all too well the frustration of accidentally clicking on a purchase button or being lured into making an unintended purchase by cleverly placed prompts.

Starting in March 2023, the FTC has initiated the distribution of refunds totaling $72 million – part of a larger $245 million fine given to Epic Games. This fine was issued due to players who unintentionally spent money being deceived by Epic Games, and these initial refunds are being disbursed now.

After the FTC vs. Fortnite lawsuit was resolved, it was determined that the game developer had employed a ‘contradictory, unexpected, and perplexing control setup’ which resulted in numerous players unintentionally making unwanted purchases due to this confusing layout.

Are You Owed a Fortnite Refund?

Lately, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has been actively scrutinizing such practices, often characterized as strategically arranging purchase buttons and prompts in online marketplaces, potentially leading customers to make unwanted purchases they didn’t intentionally initiate.

As a passionate enthusiast, I can’t help but share that I recently learned about a situation involving Epic Games. The FTC alleged that they were unknowingly allowing children to incur unauthorized charges without any parental supervision or consent. It’s troubling to see companies employ such tactics, but the repercussions faced by Epic Games from the Federal Trade Commission are significant. This isn’t the first time a company has found itself in this predicament, nor will it be the last, but the legal action against Epic Games highlights the importance of responsible business practices.

Through a resolution, Epic Games decided to cease employing such questionable strategies. Moreover, they mentioned their intention to institute a swift mechanism for seeking consumer approval prior to any purchase.

In the upcoming week, approximately 629,344 customers are set for a refund averaging around $114 each. This is merely the initial stage of a larger wave of refunds.

How to Get a Fortnite Refund

Should you feel affected by this matter, you have the option to submit a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission via their online submission form.

However, there are some prerequisites you’ll need to meet in terms of eligibility:

  • You must be a resident of the United States
  • You must be at least 18 to complete a form (a parent or guardian can complete it on your behalf)
  • You must have been charged in-game currency between January 2017 and September 2022

You’ve got until January 10, 2025, to make a claim.
