The innovative city-building game titled “Foundation” has recently made its debut on Steam and received a generally favorable response. Since February 2019, this game has been in early access, and it officially launched to the public on January 31, 2025.

Due to the continuous success of well-crafted series like simulation games such as Civilization and Age of Empires, along with others, this genre has managed to keep gamers captivated for quite some time. It’s worth mentioning that simulation games are among the most played ever created, with The Sims 4 being a prime example. These games not only draw in a massive player base but also provide numerous hours of gameplay due to their high replay value. A notable subset within simulation is city-building, which encompasses games like Cities: Skylines, Anno 1800, and Manor Lords. More recently, an indie game has entered this category after a long period in early access, finally launching as a full release.

The game titled “Foundation” is a city-building adventure set in a medieval era, developed and published by a small studio called Polymorph Games. It offers a unique, gridless gameplay experience where you construct buildings, expand your settlement, and manage its inhabitants. Some of the standout features include modular building options, job assignments to villagers for production chains, and Creative Mode, which lets players relax and play at their leisure. Released just two days ago, “Foundation” has gotten off to a promising start, boasting a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam. As of writing this, Valve’s data indicates that there have been 338 positive reviews posted since January 31, which is nearly double the 141 negative reviews during the same period. Remarkably, “Foundation” has an even higher overall rating of “Very Positive,” considering all user reviews received since it debuted as an early access title.

Foundation’s Promising Reviews Come Coupled with a Big Surge in Engagement

It’s fortunate for Polymorph Games that their debut title, Foundation, has been well-received and has managed to attract a significant portion of Steam’s player community since its launch. As per SteamDB statistics, the simulation game has reached a peak concurrent player count of 13,670, which is its highest since it was listed on Valve’s storefront. This feat is even more impressive considering that Foundation is Polymorph’s first game.

Examining Foundation’s interaction chart during its early access phase, it appears that repeated high points could suggest that the Polymorph development team is consistently tuning in to player feedback and enhancing the game accordingly. Historically, many games have utilized their early access period effectively, leading to robust launches.
