There’s nothing more fun than spending hundreds of hours playing your favorite FPS games.
People usually spend a lot of time playing games with others, either online or with friends nearby. But sometimes, a single game’s story mode is so good you just want to replay it again and again. These games are filled with so much to do that it’s hard to stop! For me, timeless games like Doom are always fun, even after playing them many times over the years.
Whether you love a compelling story, teaming up with friends, or battling it out online, these are the first-person shooters we’ve lost countless hours playing.
Although all of these games are first-person shooters, they also blend elements from other genres like action and role-playing games.
10. Destiny 2
Bungie’s Forever Game
I’ll never forget being at E3 years ago when Bungie first unveiled Destiny. It was a really ambitious game, and its development had both exciting successes and difficult challenges.
This pattern carried over into Destiny 2, leaving many players feeling like they were in a complicated relationship with the game – one they couldn’t seem to leave, despite its flaws.
Honestly, when Destiny 2 is good, it’s really good. Bungie clearly knows how to make a game feel amazing. But they often seem to create problems for themselves that don’t need to be there. Even with all its issues, I’ve easily sunk hundreds of hours into it – and I know I’ll keep playing, so that has to mean something!
9. Borderlands 4
A Return To Form
Games like Destiny, with their large online communities, are known for offering players hundreds of hours of content. Surprisingly, Borderlands 4, which lacks that extensive online setup, actually provides a much more compelling reason to keep playing again and again.
Borderlands 4 marks a welcome return to the series’ roots, focusing on what originally made Borderlands so popular: compelling gameplay and satisfying loot. While the franchise is known for its humor and unique characters, this installment prioritizes being a great ‘looter shooter’ first and foremost.
Borderlands 4 still has the same great personality fans love, but it really shines with its gameplay. The story, character designs, open world, huge selection of weapons, and helpful improvements all work together seamlessly to create a fantastic experience.
8. Left 4 Dead
Pills Here!
Almost twenty years ago, when I was in college, I was probably either playing World of Warcraft or Left 4 Dead. If not one, I was definitely playing the other!
The game’s core gameplay was just incredibly satisfying. While the idea – a cooperative zombie shooter – isn’t new, Valve executed it flawlessly. It strikes a perfect balance, being easy to pick up but offering plenty of depth for skilled players.
What I loved most was playing this game at my local LAN center. It let us team up or battle it out with friends right there in the same room, creating unforgettable gaming memories. I really wish new players could experience that same feeling of discovery today.
7. Counter-Strike
Bomb Has Been Planted
When it comes to Valve and long-lasting, engaging first-person shooters, Counter-Strike is the obvious choice. Let’s get straight to the point – if you’re looking for a game with hundreds of hours of content, it’s Counter-Strike.
I’ve noticed that people tend to prefer different versions of the game (like 1.6, Source, CS:GO, or CS2) depending on how old they are. For me, being close to 40, I really enjoyed Source. The match length felt just right, and the fact that you didn’t respawn after being eliminated made the games much more intense.
The continued success of the Counter-Strike series really shows how strong the brand is. While I enjoy the classic game, I’ll always have a soft spot for Gun Game.
6. Cyberpunk 2077
Good Morning, Night City!
Western RPGs typically move away from older, turn-based combat systems, opting for a more immersive first-person perspective. This often means they blend RPG elements with the action and shooting mechanics of other genres.
Cyberpunk 2077 beautifully combines fast-paced shooting with the depth of a role-playing game. While it initially appears to be a typical first-person shooter, it’s actually a remarkably detailed and expansive RPG experience.
The game offers a huge, inviting world that begs to be discovered. Even when it first launched with problems, the most compelling part of Cyberpunk was the hidden depth of Night City, hinting at a strong core. Thankfully, the developers listened to feedback and transformed the game into the amazing experience it is now.
5. Fallout 4
War Never Changes
Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t unique as a first-person shooter role-playing game, and neither is Fallout 4. In fact, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the two games before Fallout 4, shared similar design elements.
Fallout 4 stands out in this list because it’s easily the best first-person shooter in the series. While it may have simplified some of the role-playing elements, the result is a game that’s easier to pick up, more streamlined, and ultimately more enjoyable to play.
With the popular Fallout show on Prime Video, a lot of people are getting excited about the games again. Now is a great time to play Fallout 4 – whether you’re a newcomer or a longtime fan!
4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart Of Chornobyl
Journey Into The Exclusion Zone
From FPS-RPG hybrids to an open-world survival horror FPS.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 isn’t perfectly polished – it has some rough spots – but that actually contributes to its unique atmosphere. It’s not a fast-paced shooter where you rush in guns blazing. Instead, the focus is on surviving, and experiencing that through a first-person shooter perspective is what makes the game so engaging.
What truly captivates you and makes you want to play for a long time is how completely the game pulls you into its world. Few games create such a strong sense of atmosphere, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 delivers some of the most immersive experiences you’ll find in gaming.
3. Halo: Master Chief Collection
I Need A Weapon
I mentioned before how Counter-Strike has remained popular for so long, even as other first-person shooter games have come and gone.

While recent Halo games haven’t maintained the same popularity as before, the original games created by Bungie are still fantastic. Luckily, you can play them all in the Master Chief Collection!
Some people might consider it a bit misleading to package six games – Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4 – as a single collection. However, the real benefit is the fantastic value you get. You could easily spend more than 10 hours just playing through the single-player campaigns, and they remain enjoyable even now. Plus, the multiplayer is still great!
2. Escape From Tarkov
Hundreds Of Hours Before 1.0 Even Launched
You can tell a game is truly great when you’ve already invested countless hours playing it, even before its official release.
Escape From Tarkov initially released as an early alpha version in 2016, moving into beta testing in 2017. However, it didn’t become widely popular until 2020, when it rose to become a leading multiplayer game.
Escape From Tarkov isn’t the original extraction shooter, but it’s largely responsible for popularizing the genre. Its combination of intense moments, challenging gameplay, and rewarding progression makes it incredibly addictive.
1. Call of Duty: Warzone
Dropping In
Similar to how Escape from Tarkov isn’t the only ‘extraction shooter’ game, Call of Duty: Warzone wasn’t the first Battle Royale game. In fact, Fortnite is likely more popular.
Call of Duty’s core gameplay just feels right in a Battle Royale setting. There’s a familiar and enjoyable quality to the game, whether you’re revisiting a classic map like Verdansk or tackling the new features and updates.
No matter your feelings about the latest Call of Duty games, including Black Ops 7, Warzone remains a popular option and is likely to keep players engaged for many hours to come.
