Friday the 13th Developer IllFonic Announces Layoffs

As a long-time follower of IllFonic and their thrilling creations like Friday the 13th: The Game and Killer Klowns from Outer Space, I find myself saddened by today’s news. The gaming industry is like a rollercoaster, with its ups and downs, but to see a studio that has brought us so much joy struggling is disheartening.

In 2024, IllFonic, known for creating Friday the 13th: The Game and Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, has regrettably become the next studio to implement layoffs.

In a recent social media update, Charles Brungardt (CEO and co-founder) acknowledged that the job cuts are a reflection of the tough circumstances in the video game sector.

“Today we had to accept the harsh reality that the state of the industry has impacted us here at IllFonic,” he said. “It is with the heaviest of hearts that cuts to our teams had to be made today as we re-aligned to a refined strategy.”

Beyond creating their own video games, Illfonic also lends a hand in the development of titles such as Crysis 3 and Star Citizen. Interestingly, the company behind Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium Games, underwent some staff reductions not long ago.

It’s not clear exactly how many employees were terminated, but according to LeadIQ, Illfonic had a workforce of 96 people by October 2024.

At the end of his remarks, Brungardt kindly invited anyone with available positions to contact him so they could assist in finding employment for those who are currently jobless.

In 2024, it’s reported that more than 14,600 jobs were lost in the gaming industry across approximately 170 companies. However, when you consider unreported job losses, the actual number is estimated to be over 16,000 according to TopMob’s sources.
