Be warned: this list contains spoilers for the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga and anime.
I’m already getting so hyped for the Winter 2026 anime season, and honestly, all I can think about is the second season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End! I can’t wait to see Frieren, Fern, and Stark continue their journey toward Aureole – I’m expecting some seriously tough battles up north! Fern’s really come into her own after becoming a First-Class Mage, and she’s going to be a huge asset. Plus, it’s awesome watching Stark get stronger, and of course, Frieren is still as cool and collected as ever. The first season was incredible – it even got nominated for Anime of the Year, and deservedly so! So many of us fell in love with the characters and the way the story unfolds. It’s not just constant fighting, which is great; it mixes stunning action with these really beautiful, emotional moments that just hit you in the feels.
The second season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is scheduled to premiere on January 16th and will probably adapt story arcs from the manga including Continued Northern Travels, Divine Revolte, and Golden Land. It might also cover the Goddess’s Monument Arc. Expect to see both familiar characters and new ones, including a highly popular villain. Be warned: the rest of this article contains spoilers.
Serie
The Massively Powerful Elven Mage Who Is Twice as Old as Frieren
- Manga Debut: Chapter 43
- Anime Debut: Episode 20
Despite not appearing much in the first season of Frieren, Serie quickly won over fans with her relaxed personality and impressive magical abilities. Her long life and vast knowledge of spells suggest she’s actually more powerful than Frieren, though we haven’t seen the full extent of her strength yet. Many viewers are eager to see more of the golden-haired elf in the upcoming season. What makes her story particularly interesting is that she was the one who trained Frieren’s mentor, Flamme, hinting that she could play a significant role in Frieren’s journey.
Serie becomes a more important character during a storyline called the Foundation Festival Arc, which probably won’t appear in the TV show until its third season. However, we learn more about her in the current season’s storylines, Divine Revolte and Golden Land, so viewers should pay close attention when Season 2 starts in January. A specific fight between Serie and the new villain, Macht, is expected to be a highlight.
Denken
A Slick First-Class Mage with Surprising Ties to the Bad Guy
- Manga Debut: Chapter 37
- Anime Debut: Episode 18
Denken, who appeared in the final 10 episodes of Season 1, was almost 80 years old when he decided to take the First-Class Mage Exam. The reasons behind his decision, and his relationship with Macht – a key villain debuting in the Golden Land Arc – will be revealed in Season 2.
Many viewers weren’t initially impressed with Denken, but learning his life story could quickly make him a fan favorite. Though he seems stern and is incredibly clever, he’s poised to play a key role in the unfolding plot. Plus, his powerful abilities – creating tornadoes, hellfire, and beams of light – will likely be a huge advantage against the demons that are about to appear.
Solitär
A Peculiar Demon Who Quickly Becomes Frieren’s Enemy #1
- Manga Debut: Chapter 88
The most dangerous threats aren’t always the most obvious. Solitär, a powerful demon appearing in the second season of Frieren, seems harmless at first. She’s small and has a friendly smile, leading people to underestimate her. However, she’s incredibly strong – on par with some of the most destructive beings in existence. Solitär is fascinated by living creatures, especially humans, whom she both respects and fears, and constantly seeks to learn more about them.
Solitär is a key antagonist introduced in the Golden Land Arc. Frieren identifies her as a particularly dangerous foe because of her skill at controlling people. Interestingly, despite deeply studying human feelings and minds, Solitär herself is incapable of experiencing emotions, which makes her even more frightening. Fern, Stark, and Frieren will face a significant challenge when they confront this deceptively sweet-looking demon.
Macht
The New Major Antagonist with a Golden Touch
- Manga Debut: Chapter 77
With the start of a new season comes a new villain, and Macht is proving to be one of the most intimidating yet. As the most powerful of the Demon King’s Seven Sages of Destruction, he can turn anything into incredibly durable gold. Unusually for a demon, he’s also capable of using human magic. This connection to humanity will be a key part of Season 2, as Macht previously pledged loyalty to a powerful feudal lord.
Honestly, I’m so excited for Macht in the next season of Frieren! A truly great villain can make a story, and he seems incredibly complex. He’s definitely intimidating and capable of terrible things, but it’s fascinating to hear he’s actually helped people too – he’s not just pure evil. I’m really looking forward to seeing how he interacts with the rest of the cast as Season 2 unfolds, it’s going to be epic!
Himmel
The Catalyst for Frieren’s Understanding of Emotion (Gone but Never Forgotten)
- Manga Debut: Chapter 1
- Anime Debut: Episode 1
Even though Himmel died many years ago, his influence will still be strongly felt in Season 2 of Frieren. The first season showed us, through flashbacks, how much Frieren changed during her adventures with Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen, and how deeply she was affected by his death. After Himmel passed away from old age, Frieren promised herself she would spend more time getting to know humans, realizing she hadn’t fully appreciated the time they had together. We’ll see her continue this journey in new episodes starting in 2026.
While Himmel won’t be a central character in Season 2, his moments will still be significant. He continues to motivate Frieren, helping her connect with her feelings and overcome her loneliness. He’s the reason Frieren took on Fern as an apprentice and allowed Eisen to include Stark in their group. Even years after his passing, Himmel’s influence will continue to be felt.
Frieren
This Formidable Elven Mage Still Has Plenty to Learn
- Manga Debut: Chapter 1
- Anime Debut: Episode 1
It’s common for supporting characters to become fan favorites, but this show is different. From the very beginning, Frieren captivated viewers with her personality – she’s both funny and powerful thanks to her consistently calm nature. Because she’s lived for so long, the series makes you think about what it would be like to repeatedly experience the loss of loved ones and witness a world constantly changing in unexpected ways.
I’ve been watching Frieren, and it’s been fascinating to see her change. For so long, she preferred being alone, but in Season 1, she took on Fern as an apprentice and started traveling again, both to gather spells and to revisit places from her long life. It felt like a big step for her, finally following through on her promise to Himmel and making an effort to understand humans. Now, heading into Season 2, I expect to see her grow even more as a person. Her relationships with Fern and the rest of the group are getting stronger, and while keeping her promise is bringing good things, it’s also presenting some new challenges for her.
