Keith David is arguably the most recognizable voice in video games among Hollywood actors. After becoming well-known in films like The Thing and Platoon, he started doing voice work for games in the late 1990s and has become a gaming legend over the last twenty years.
David began his gaming career with a role in the original Fallout, but he truly became well-known in the late 2000s and early 2010s. He appeared in many popular and highly-rated games, such as Halo 2, consistently delivering excellent performances in important roles.
The Arbiter/ Thel ‘Vadam – Halo 2
One of David’s most notable gaming performances is as Thel ‘Vadam, or the Arbiter, who debuted in Halo 2 as a key character. The Arbiter belongs to the Sangheili, an alien race initially presented as enemies – known as Elites – in the first Halo game. Making players control one of these Elites in the sequel was a challenge, demanding skillful writing and acting to overcome the established negative perception players already had of them.
David gave a truly impressive performance as the religious fanatic, and his distinctive, deep voice was perfect for the character’s mysterious nature. He also returned to the role of Arbiter in both Halo 3 and Halo 5.
David Anderson – Mass Effect
I think Keith David’s performance as Captain David Anderson in the Mass Effect series is his most memorable video game role. Though he initially commands the Normandy, he quickly hands leadership over to the player character, Shepard. Throughout the games, he acts as a guide and mentor to Shepard.
I always loved David Anderson! Just like with The Arbiter, David is portrayed as a really solid, honorable guy, but he’s way more lighthearted. He’ll actually crack jokes sometimes, which is great. It’s a shame his role gets a little smaller as Shepard becomes more of a hero throughout the three games, but even with less screen time, he always manages to steal the show. He brings such charisma to what could have been just another typical military character.
Julius Little & Self – The Saints Row Franchise
Julius Little leads the 3rd Street Saints, the gang the player joins in the Saints Row games. Like other characters David Jones has played, Julius is a leader, but he’s far more complex and ruthless. He’s willing to do whatever it takes – even if it means sacrificing his own morals – to achieve his goals.
When Saints Row 4 came out, Julius was no longer involved, but David remained. Deep Silver brought him back in a clever and over-the-top way that fit the game’s increasingly wild style: he plays himself as the Vice President, working with the player who is the President. The game playfully points out how David reminds everyone of Julius, and jokes about him entering politics after feeling he’d achieved everything in acting.
Keith David’s Other Video Game Roles
David is best known for his incredible work in those particular games, but he’s actually been in many others. He’s lent his talents to a variety of video games, ranging from major titles to smaller projects, some of which were hits and others less so.
- Decker – Fallout
- Apollo – Disney’s Hades Challenge
- Vhailor- Planescape: Torment
- Lord Vekk- Lords of EverQuest
- Barricade – Transformers: The Game
- Dr. Facilier – Disney The Princess and the Frog
- Sergeant Foley – Modern Warfare 2
- The Cat – Coraline
- Psycho Delic – DreamWorks Megamind: Mega Team Unite
- Nick Fury – Marvel Heroes
- Chaos – Dissidia Final Fantasy
- Moloch – Darksiders Genesis
- Spawn – Mortal Kombat 11
- Zavala – Destiny 2: The Final Shape
I first noticed David’s amazing voice acting way back in 1997 with the original Fallout – he was so good as Decker, a really compelling and shady crime boss. He kept popping up in these awesome RPGs, and Planescape Torment was another standout – he played Vhailor, this intense character you could either battle or try to get on your side. More recently, I was thrilled to hear him as Zavala in Destiny 2: The Final Shape (stepping into a big role after Lance Reddick’s passing). He’s also Sergeant Foley in Modern Warfare 2 and Moloch in Darksiders Genesis – it’s cool to learn Moloch is based on a real historical figure, but David really brought him to life!
Psycho Delic was initially created for the Megamind movie, but ultimately only appeared in the video game adaptation.
David returned to voice characters he’d previously played in other media, including The Cat in the Coraline video game, Spawn in Mortal Kombat 11, and Apollo in Disney’s Hades Challenge. However, he first voiced Barricade only in the Transformers game. Similarly, his roles in Dissidia Final Fantasy and Marvel Heroes were one-time performances, which is a shame, as Keith David would have been a great Nick Fury.
