FromSoft Games Can Be More Like Sekiro and Less Like Elden Ring In One Way

Highlights

  • Elden Ring elevates FromSoftware’s action-RPG formula, offering a vast open world with exciting bosses and loot.
  • While Elden Ring’s dragon bosses are epic, some may find the fights repetitive due to similar movesets.
  • To create the ideal dragon boss fight, FromSoftware should combine the scale of Sekiro with the gameplay of Elden Ring.

As a long-time fan with countless hours spent traversing FromSoftware’s intricate worlds, I can confidently say that Elden Ring stands as a remarkable testament to their ever-evolving action-RPG formula. However, when it comes to dragon boss battles, my heart yearns for the grandeur and uniqueness of Sekiro’s Divine Dragon.

As FromSoftware releases each new installment in its acclaimed action-RPG series, it consistently refines and builds upon the original formula. For instance, they experimented with unique bosses in Dark Souls 2, introduced trick weapons in Bloodborne, and expanded the story’s breadth and depth in Dark Souls 3. This trend continues with Elden Ring, pushing the boundaries of their signature gameplay yet again.

As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s latest masterpiece, pushes the boundaries like never before. This action-RPG takes their signature formula and sprawls it across a colossal open world, teeming with intriguing boss battles, enigmatic dungeons, and enticing loot. On paper, Elden Ring seems to be a giant leap for FromSoftware’s gameplay style. However, there are a few aspects where their previous titles, such as Sekiro, excel slightly, particularly when it comes to the design of dragon bosses.

Future FromSoftware Games Should Use Sekiro’s Dragon Boss Blueprint Over Elden Ring’s

Elden Ring’s Dragon Bosses Are Epic But Repetitive

The first time players run into one of Elden Ring‘s dragons is a pretty momentous occasion. More often than not, players’ first dragon encounter will be with Elden Ring‘s Flying Dragon Agheel, located near the starting area of Limgrave. This boss fight is suitably epic, with the dragon’s moveset containing a variety of impressive sweeping attacks and flying maneuvers. But while Flying Dragon Agheel is a memorable boss fight, it quickly becomes just one of many.

In Elden Ring, you’ll encounter more than ten dragons, with a few extra ones appearing in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expansion. Each dragon has its unique name and slightly distinct visual style, but they share quite similar combat movesets, often differing only in their elemental attacks. This repetition in fighting styles can lead to rather monotonous battles. Upon finishing Elden Ring, some players might notice that several of the game’s dragon bosses start to seem very similar.

Among the many dragon battles in Elden Ring, several ones truly outshine the rest. Dragonlord Placidusax, Lichdragon Fortissax, and Bayle the Dread are some of the finest dragon boss encounters FromSoftware has ever crafted. These battles boast stunning visuals, an epic soundtrack, and unique combat patterns, making each one a memorable experience.

Sekiro’s Dragon Boss Feels Truly Special

In the game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, there is just one boss battle with a dragon, but it’s an incredibly striking encounter that stands out among FromSoftware’s storied history. This formidable foe can be found at the conclusion of Fountainhead Palace, where it resides in a colossal, otherworldly arena. Prior to facing the Divine Dragon, you’ll need to dispatch some dragon minions that resemble trees. Once you’ve engaged the Divine Dragon, you’ll bear witness to its celestial splendor, equipped with an enormous blue sword unmatched in our world. To defeat it, players must dodge the dragon’s sweeping attacks, soar on its summoned gusts into the heavens, and pelt its head with lightning. Though the battle may seem effortless, it’s an awe-inspiring encounter that successfully conveys the grandeur and size of a dragon fight in a manner unlike any other FromSoft game to date.

An Ideal FromSoftware Dragon Boss Fight Lies Somewhere In The Middle

In order for the next FromSoftware action-RPG’s dragon boss fight to be captivating, it should learn from both Elden Ring and Sekiro. The dragon battle should emulate the grandeur and grace of such mythical beasts as Sekiro’s Divine Dragon did, yet it should also absorb the quicker tempo of Elden Ring’s Bayle and Placidusax combat style.
